Collin Morikawa has opened up on his surprising week at Augusta National, in which he exceeded all expectations
Morikawa withdrew from the Players Championship four weeks ago after suffering back spasms on the second hole.
He was still dealing with his back problem in the days leading up to The Masters and nearly withdrew from the event.
Morikawa made the right decision to tee it up on Thursday despite his concerns, as he finished the week in the top 10.
Morikawa’s play improved progressively throughout the week, culminating with a four-under-par 68 on Saturday and Sunday.
Considering he had seemed likely to miss the cut before the event started, to finish in a tie for seventh place was an incredible effort.

“Yeah, this blew by any expectations I had for the week,” Morikawa reacted. “Honestly, for me it was just survive each day, wake up, do the prep I needed to do, and go and tee off on one.
“I didn’t know how uncomfortable it was going to be, but we managed to get through all 18 and all 72.”
Morikawa even suggested it was one of his “best” performances of all time to overcome his back injury at Augusta.
“Yeah, trust me, it’s going to be one of the best tournaments ever,” he continued in his post-Masters interview.
“I’m going to remember this one for many reasons, but mostly how strong the mind is, to be able to go out and convince yourself that everything is going to be okay.”
The only negative for Morikawa will be that he possibly could have won the Green Jacket if not for his difficult preparation.
Still, the 29-year-old’s resilient display bodes well for the remainder of the season; he will be a leading contender heading into the next three major championships.
