Ohtani joined the Dodgers ahead of the 2024 season, and has already made his mark in the National League through just two seasons.
He has won both of the last two NL MVP awards unanimously, making the NL All-Star team both years. On top of his MVP awards, he won NLCS MVP in last year’s postseason due to his electric performance in the final game of a four-game sweep over the Milwaukee Brewers, during which he hit three home runs and struck out 10 batters.
Additionally, he has comfortably won the NL Silver Slugger for designated hitters in both of his seasons with the Dodgers.
Ohtani has won NL Player of the Week four times, all of which came in 2024, and earned NL Player of the Month honors twice , once in Sept. 2024 and the other in May 2025.
As it stands, Ohtani clearly has a shot to win the NL Cy Young award, the only major accolade he is yet to win in MLB.
FanGraphs’ projections place Ohtani fifth in their ranking system (Cy Young Points), behind Chris Sale, Clay Holmes, Justin Wrobleski and Bryce Elder.
Ohtani has consistently put up fantastic numbers this season, though, and the inevitable fall-off of a couple of pitchers in front of him could make him a heavy favorite in the near future. Innings pitched could post an issue for Ohtani in his quest to earn the title of the NL’s best pitcher, though, as many analysts have pointed out.
However, if he maintains six innings per start and continues posting zeroes throughout the remainder of the season, he will definitely find himself in the running for the award down the stretch.
