Los Angeles Dodgers superstar Shohei Ohtani came into Wednesday’s game against the Toronto Blue Jays with two major streaks going, and while one of them came to an end, it wasn’t before some more history was made.
Ohtani gave up a run in the third inning, bringing his scoreless innings streak to an end at 25.1.
It’s worth noting that the run was unearned.
Ohtani walked Daulton Varsho, who then took second on a passed ball by catcher Will Smith. He then scored on a double by Jesus Sanchez.
Though the streak ended, Ohtani did take the title of longest scoreless innings streak for a Japanese pitcher in Major League Baseball history.
Previously, the record was 25 innings, held jointly by Yu Darvish and Hisashi Iwakuma, per Japanese social media account MLB_comment.
Interestingly, the same streak of 25 shutout innings was also held by Babe Ruth, the legendary slugger and pitcher to whom Ohtani’s two-way dominance is most often compared.

Ohtani threw six innings Tuesday and allowed only that third-inning run, which was unearned due to the passed ball.
He struck out two batters against four hits and one walk.
Of his 96 pitches, 60 were strikes.
The bulk of his pitches, 76, came in the first four innings.
While he let runners on base, Ohtani was also left them there, including a huge strikeout of Kazuma Okamoto.
By the end of his outing, Ohtani looked even more in control, allowing a double to Vladimir Guerrero Jr. but, with an assist from Miguel Rojas, who caught Guerrero trying to take third, was able to get three outs and prevent any further damage.
Ohtani’s other streak, his consecutive games reaching base safely, continues.
With a walk in the first at-bat of the game, he reached base safely for the 43rd straight game, tying Ichiro Suzuki for the record for Japanese-born MLB players, as detailed by Sarah Langs.
Before Ohtani, Suzuki actually had the top two such streaks: 43 games in 2009 and 40 games in 2004.
How long do you think Ohtani can keep his on-base streak alive?
