This incident caused plenty of controversy and discussion throughout Bayern vs. PSG’s entire Champions League second leg — and beyond.
After a clearance attempt by Vitinha bounced not forward toward Bayern’s goal but onto the arm of his own teammate Joao Neves, whose arm was raised halfway up and made his body bigger, the entire Allianz Arena erupted.
Every player, official, and fan of the German record champions wanted to hear the whistle for a Bayern penalty. But it never came — the whistle stayed silent, and there was no VAR intervention either. One possible explanation: if a clearance attempt hits a teammate’s hand in the penalty area, that can be seen as an indication of a non-punishable handball.
As always, though, opinions are sharply divided here — not just on sofas at home, but online as well.
Former referee Manuel Gräfe, in any case, has a very clear opinion on the incident. On the platform ‘x’, he wrote: “Sorry, but this is all just a joke now.” In his view, the arm moves into the ball’s path; this time it was even stretched out farther, at shoulder height, after the ball was struck.
He then added: “That’s already a 100 percent penalty as it is, but even more so in the context of the first leg — unbelievable!” He was referring to the handball penalty PSG were awarded in the first leg after a handball by Davies, who was hit from close range.
In the comments, he expanded on his view, but also received plenty of criticism for it.
What do you think? Would you have given the penalty? Feel free to write it in the comments!
