Brendan Sorsby, a quarterback from Texas Tech, may enter the NFL supplemental draft due to a betting scandal affecting his eligibility. The Cleveland Browns are considered a potential team to pursue him, with analysts divided on the value of a first-round pick for his talent amid the controversy.

After starting for the Cincinnati Bearcats the past two seasons, quarterback Brendan Sorsby decided to skip the draft and play another season of college football, transferring to Texas Tech this offseason. Sorsby had a strong year and showed why some, including myself, are intrigued with him as an NFL prospect.
In 2025, he started 12 games, completing 61.6% of his passes for 2,800 yards, 27 touchdowns, and 5 interceptions. He also showed off his athleticism, rushing for 580 yards and nine more touchdowns. But his future is now shrouded in mystery after a betting scandal, resulting in him entering a rehab facility.
An article published by ESPN laid out the allegations: "Sorsby had accounts with sportsbooks and daily fantasy operators in several states, according to multiple sources with direct knowledge of the matter, who described him as a high-volume, low-stakes bettor, meaning he placed many wagers for small amounts. Some of his bets were placed using an account under a different name, multiple sources said. ESPN's Pete Thamel reported that Sorsby bet on an Indiana game during his freshman season as a Hoosiers quarterback."
Sorsby could lose his eligibility and, in turn, try to enter the NFL supplemental draft, and the Cleveland Browns have been named as a potential team that could target Sorsby. Draft analyst Todd McShay believes the team should use a first-rounder on him because of his upside, and that is far too high a price tag with the scandal hanging over his head. ESPN's Cleveland Tony Grossi has also said that the Browns have done work on Sorsby.

He's a talented player, there's no doubt. If he had come out in this year's class, he would've been quarterback three for me and maybe challenged Ty Simpson for quarterback two because of his talent. Sorsby's got a huge arm, quick release, and is a great athlete who extends plays and picks up yards on the ground. But his mechanics need work, specifically his footwork, and his decision-making needs to improve; he needs time to develop more.
It's obvious why the Browns are linked to a talented quarterback with uncertainty around the position in Cleveland, but there's just too much risk attached to Sorsby. If the Browns had an established veteran and could take the risk of letting him sit and develop, similar to Simpson with the Rams, minus the controversy, they could take the swing, but the risk outweighs the reward for Cleveland.
