One of the biggest debates when it comes to the NFL Draft is between ready-now players and potential. Well, sitting at No. 27 this season, the San Francisco 49ers have that dilemma on their hands, as they look to add to the roster in the 2026 NFL Draft.
Looking at mock drafts ahead of the week, many are looking at offensive linemen, wide receivers, and defensive linemen for the 49ers. All three of those positions make sense for San Francisco.
At offensive line, the 49ers need a future replacement for Trent Williams, and starting left tackles are hard to find outside of the early rounds of the draft. At wide receiver, San Francisco doesnât have much security for the future, instead signing veterans Mike Evans and Christian Kirk this offseason. They could use a future starter there. At defensive line, San Francisco could add more depth to a room where Nick Bosa and Mykel Williams are coming off torn ACLs.
But, there is a question about how much impact a draftee at any of those three positions will have in 2026. At offensive line, the only true question mark is left guard. At wide receiver, the 49ers have Evans, Kirk, and leading the way in 2026, with recent draftees and behind them. At defensive line, the 49ers have Bosa, Williams, , and as penciled-in starters.
When looking at positions where an early-round rookie could come in as a potential starter, safety and cornerback could be spots, with inconsistent play there in 2025. But it all comes down to how the board falls on Thursday in the first round.
Speaking to reporters on Monday, general manager John Lynch spoke on the teamâs roster building this offseason, which has given them flexibility in the draft.
âI think in general, what [we did in] free agency this year, what signing a guy like Trent and having some finality there probably leaves you a little more comfortable in various scenarios. But I think what I liked about what we did in free agency this year is that thereâs not a ton of needs,â Lynch said.
A goal of the team has been to head into the draft without glaring holes that force the 49ers to draft more for need than select the best players in the draft. While Lynch understands the importance of having some ready-now players and others being potential starters in the future, the plans are wide open this offseason after a quality free agency period.
âWell, I think what you try to do is position your team so that you just donât have glaring holes where like we have to take this position,â Lynch added. âThereâs some comfort in that and I think it gives you more of a belief and a comfort in just picking the best players. You canât go wrong with picking good football players.
âObviously, itâs a combination of all those things (picking guys who can play now and have future starters). Itâs short term, itâs long term. But I think having that in place, some of the things weâve done this offseason gives us a great ability to go in with really a mindset of taking the best player, not just saying weâve got to come out with this position.â
Weâll see how the 49ers operate this weekend, but theyâve got some optionality with their six picks, which could even result in some trades up and down the board.
