Unraveling the fallout and significance of the Boston Red Sox firing manager Alex Cora is going to take plenty of time. It's been nearly two weeks already since it happened, but we'll be talking about it all season.
In the short-term aftermath of the firing, it was reported that chief baseball officer Craig Breslow met with some of the players who had questions and/or concerns about the move. It was known for a while that shortstop Trevor Story was one of those players. It's no surprise, but we learned more recently that starting pitcher Garrett Crochet was another.
On Monday, Tim Healey of The Boston Globeappeared on "Foul Territory" and provided a report on how Crochet's discussion with Breslow went. Though it's not as though Healey or any other insider was present for the conversation, the general takeaway seemed to be that the star lefty was somewhat more accepting of Breslow's reasoning than Story was.
"Garrett Crochet, for example, went in on Sunday to talk to the boss and ask his questions and gain a greater understanding," Healey said. Crochet seemed, not okay with it, but understood where Breslow was coming from. Trevor Story famously not happy, infamously not happy with it, likewise went and had those conversations with Breslow, which he felt was needed, and seemed less happy than Crochet."
However, Healey's other main point was that it didn't particularly matter how the players felt about the move. There were 135 games left in the season at the time of Cora's firing, and all 26 of the players were under contract to keep going about their business during those games.
Shortly after his great start in on the day after Cora's firing, Crochet went on the injured list with left shoulder inflammation. It was an indicator that just about everything that can go wrong for the Red Sox this season will.
Craig Breslow's meeting with Garrett Crochet aimed to address player concerns regarding the recent firing of manager Alex Cora.
