Smylie Kaufman is not entirely convinced that Cameron Young is going to be a contender at the PGA Championship this week at Aronimink.
There has arguably been no one in more impressive form than Young in recent months. The American has won both The Players Championship and the Cadillac Championship this season.
The 29-year-old has finished in the top 10 in six of his last seven starts on the PGA Tour, including a tied for third finish at The Masters.
So it is no surprise that many believe that Young is going to be a favourite to win a first major title in the coming days.
Interestingly, Smylie Kaufman has admitted that he has one real concern about Young heading into the opening round of the PGA Championship.
Speaking on The Smylie Show, Kaufman claimed that one of the challenges at Aronimink may not play to Young’s strengths.
“I would say for Cam, I’d be worried about his wedge game, is it going to be as good as everybody else’s? He’s a very good wedge player, but I would say that would be his kryptonite, just percentage points of being a little bit worse than other guys in that category, especially if the greens change a little bit, going from soft to firm. I think he does much better when the greens are really firm and he can hit wedges full and he doesn’t have to worry about spinning it back. He’s a high spin player,” he said.

“The putter at times, it’s been very, very good. It won him Doral, but it also went cold on him Sunday at The Masters. It went cold on him on Sunday at Truist. So we’ve seen that yes, it’s been good enough to win. Is it going to be good enough here at a golf course that has the big slopy greens, where he’s going to have those tricky 10 to 15 footers that aren’t the plainer putts, the double breakers.
“I don’t love Cam Young as much as maybe other people would this week. I loved him heading into Augusta National, but I think this golf course, I think the wedge play is my biggest concern for him. But I do think that closing stretch, where you get to 15, a big boy par four, where you’re hitting six and five irons, four irons into this par four green, or even the 17th hole, or the eighth hole, these par threes, meaty par threes, that’s right up his alley.”
Young is actually just inside the top 10 on the PGA Tour for the proximity to the hole with his approach shots this season.
And there is not a significant drop-off when you look at his approaches inside 100 yards, with Young currently in 24th on tour.
Bizarrely, he falls to 108th on tour when it comes to approach shots from between 100 and 125 yards.
With Aronimink presenting plenty of opportunities to hit approach shots with wedges, Young may need to be considerably better in that area if he is going to end up winning his first major this week.
It also cannot be discounted just how much confidence he should have right now. He showed that he had the composure to win in a tense finale at TPC Sawgrass.
And when the opportunity presented itself for Young to leave the field behind at Doral, he took the chance with both hands.
He is certainly one of the players who has the potential to steal the show, despite Kaufman’s reservations.
