Flau'jae Johnson is officially a professional basketball player. During Monday's WNBA Draft, the Golden State Valkyries selected the former LSU women's basketball star at No. 8 overall.
A four-year starter under head coach Kim Mulkey, Johnson left the program as a national champion and one of its most prolific scorers. Her 2,063 points rank No. 5 on the all-time leading scorers list.
Johnson averaged 14.6 points and 5.3 rebounds per game on 47% shooting from the field over her collegiate career. She scores at will, getting downhill, particularly in transition, but upped her game as a three-point shooter and on defense this season.
Mulkey praises Johnson as a catalyst for getting LSU back into the national spotlight as one of the best programs in the country. Johnson was the first McDonald's All-American signed by Mulkey during her tenure in Baton Rouge. Now, she's the latest Tiger to turn professional.
In its first year as a WNBA franchise, the Golden State Valkyries saw Natalie Nakase win head coach of the year. Now, she adds one of the most talented guards in the draft class to her arsenal.
Johnson won't need to purchase an entirely new wardrobe. The Valkyries sport purple as one of their main colors, like LSU.
Will Johnson's nickname from Baton Rouge stick on the west coast? Some social media users are keeping it around in their posts on Monday.
Some social media users noted that the No. 8 overall selection of Johnson was a bit lower than mock drafts projected. She was the sixth guard taken.
