MCKINNEY â Melissa erupted for six runs in the first inning and counted on pitcher Eloisa Maes to do the rest as the Lady Cardinals defeated Frisco Reedy 11-1 in a Class 5A Division I area-round one-game playoff Wednesday at McKinney Boyd.
Bradyn Youngâs two-run homer on the second at-bat of the game was soon followed by freshman Ana Gonzalesâ bases-loaded, three-run double, giving Maes all the offense she would need as the two-time defending Class 5A state champions moved on in their quest for a three-peat.
âWe knew that being the visitor, we wanted to attack early,â said Melissa coach Cassie Crabtree, whose team won its 25th straight game to improve to 30-2 on the year. âWe knew that if we could score a couple of runs early, that would put the pressure on them and thatâs what we were able to do.â
Maes was in control after getting the nice cushion and tossed a complete-game three-hitter, striking out 10 in the victory, to move to 21-2 on the year.
âHaving my team with such good bats and run support is such a relief,â Maes said. âThey made my job so much easier.â
After the six-run first when Melissa batted around, Hutton Adrian added a two-run homer in the second, her 18th home run of the season, to make it 8-0. Melissa added single tallies in the fifth, sixth, and seventh, including Kennedy Bradleyâs 19th homer of the season in the sixth.
Maes surrendered a run in the home half of the first on a single, a walk, and a wild pitch, but she retired the 14 of the next 15 to silence Reedy (24-8), which had its 11-game winning streak snapped.
Melissa won the game against Frisco Reedy with a final score of 11-1.
