Some observations from Kentucky's 2026 spring football game

The 2026 Kentucky Wildcats spring game came and went today as the storms rolled in over Kroger Field. Kentucky still got a ton of work in on the field before the rain hit. Blue team (offense) defeated the White team (defense) 23-18 in a highly competitive performance. There is a ton to discuss and here are some observations from the spring game today.

Mamba Drill

Before the official team period of the spring game started, we got to see the "Mamba Drill". This is a fast-paced, high energy and competitive drill that the Wildcats have adopted under Will Stein. It is essentially quick one-on-ones in the red zone, not just wide receivers versus cornerbacks but all one-on-one drills you see at the Senior Bowl. Wideouts versus cornerbacks, running backs versus linebackers and tight ends versus safeties in the pass game; one-on-one blocking drills between tackles and edge defenders, as well as interior offensive lineman versus defensive tackles.

Offensive Line Shaping Up

Starting left tackle Lance Heard was not out there, Will Stein said it is a minor injury that will sideline him for four weeks. The starting offensive line group remained the same every drive Kenny Minchey was in at quarterback. Left tackle was Mark Robinson, left guard was Olaus Alinen, center was Coleton Price, Tegra Tshabola was at right guard where he played at Ohio State and Malachi Wood was at right tackle. I am under the impression after today that four starting spots are set in stone, but I do think Robinson and Wood will continue to battle for the right tackle spot throughout fall camp.

Deep Wide Receiver Rotation

Nic Anderson and Hardley Gilmore were non participants today, and DJ Miller was held back due to a precautionary hamstring he dealt with through the week according to Coach Stein. Shane Carr was in a black jersey, so he was a limited participant. There were a ton of wide receivers showcasing their abilities on the field today. True freshman Kenny Darby proved he will be a factor this fall and could be the starting slot receiver, Ja'Kayden Ferguson got work in the slot as well.

Brock Coffman, Denairius Gray and true freshman Prince Jean also got plenty of reps today. This room has a lot more depth than we previously expected. Anderson and Miller are expected to be the leaders of the room, but it could be a logjam after that with a ton of players battling for playing time. This is not a bad problem to have.

Jean could ultimately be a redshirt guy, but he was playing on the outside today and made a great catch on a hinge route. Gray is another that is hard to see cracking the rotation, but got plenty of snaps today. I think you can expect Anderson, Miller, Carr and Darby to be the constants of the room. Ferguson will get some reps as well, and he was also fielding kickoffs.

Coffman is a player who got a ton of buzz this spring, so you would imagine he will be involved in the rotation too. Gilmore has experience in a loaded room. Darby is the one who caught my eye the most today, Stein said postgame "If you are good enough, you are old enough" when mentioning the true freshman's performance. Darby can create separation, adjust to the football and is dangerous with the ball in his hands.

We might see a six or seven man rotation from the wide receivers this season, which will allow them to stay fresh throughout the season.

Starting Corners Set

As we expected, Terhyon Nichols and Hasaan Sykes will be your starting cornerbacks on defense. They both have the athleticism and physicality needed to play the position. They have to make an impact and stay healthy this fall. The depth is a question, we saw Nasir Addison, Grant Grayton and Isaiah McMillan get reps today as well; which of these players will emerge in the corner rotation is something to watch as we get closer to the season.

Edge Defenders Galore

Kentucky has a loaded room on the edge, and all the players can get to the quarterback in different ways. Mi'Quise Humphrey-Grace was impressive last season, but the new scheme will benefit his play style as a true defensive end in an even front. Antonio O'Berry has ideal length and is a dangerous pass rusher, he quickly defeated Malachi Wood's block attempt in the one-on-one mamba drill. Sam Greene will be sidelined at the start of the season, adding him to this room midseason brings even more depth.

The backup edge defenders have some juice as well. Lorenzo Cowan and CJ Works both have speed to bend the edge. Cowan and Works could become more speciality rushers, coming in on third or fourth down in predictable pass situations. As it stands, this position group is the strength of the defense and may be the strength of the entire team.
