Iker Casillas: 'Seguimos siendo mejores que Barcelona en los pasillos'
Chad Tracy has managed the Red Sox for six games, but the team should remove his interim title and confirm his position through the 2026 season. Management has not committed to his status, leaving options open for potential changes.
Mentioned in this story
∗ Chad Tracy is six games into the job of managing the Red Sox, far too small a sample size to determine his strengths and weaknesses. That will take longer to determine.
But if the Red Sox want to do the right thing here, they should remove the interim from his title and announce that the job is Tracy’s through the remainder of the 2026 season.
To date, upper management seems to want to keep its options open. Several times, they’ve been asked to clarify Tracy’s status for the season, and each time, provided with the opportunity to say they have no intention to hire someone else, they’ve declined to do so.
The underlying message seems to be: We like Chad a lot, but hey, you never know who might become available....
All of which is unfair to Tracy*.* Already, he’s been given the thankless task of winning with a roster that his predecessor, a far more experienced manager, couldn’t make work.
Tracy now has the reins, but he’s surrounded by a makeshift coaching staff and is being asked to save the season. That’s a lot to put on the shoulders of someone who, only a week ago, was trying to get players ready to play in the big leagues.
It’s understandable that the Red Sox are reluctant to commit to Tracy long-term. He still has a lot to prove and managing in Boston, particularly in your first major league job, is not for the faint of heart.
But Tracy deserves a certain amount of backing. What he doesn’t deserve is the specter of Craig Breslow conducting in-season interviews with his potential replacement.
The players, too, deserve better, even if it was their subpar play that cost Alex Cora his job and led to Tracy’s unexpected promotion. The last thing the players want is a third manager being introduced to them, along with further upheaval to the staff.
Maybe Tracy will prove that he’s the right choice beyond this year and maybe he won’t. But the right thing to do is to give him the remainder of the season, without having him looking over his shoulder.
∗ This is now two seasons in a row that the Celtics have exited the playoffs in an early round – outplayed and out-coached on both occasions by lower-seeded teams.
Yes, they lost Jayson Tatum in the 2024-25 conference semi-finals, but were already down 2-1 to the Knicks and on their way to losing Game 4 and would have lost that game with or without him.
This year, they didn’t have Tatum for Saturday’s climactic Game 7, but they never should have been in that position in the first place.
Removing the interim tag would provide stability and show confidence in Tracy's management as he begins to establish his strengths.
Chad Tracy is currently the interim manager of the Red Sox, having managed for six games without a definitive commitment from management regarding his future.
It is suggested that the Red Sox should announce Tracy as the permanent manager through the remainder of the 2026 season.
Management has declined to clarify Tracy's status or commit to keeping him as the permanent manager, indicating they want to keep their options open.

This year, Joe Mazzulla proved to be his obstinate self, forever committed to the three-pointer while also shortening his bench as the series wore on.
Here’s the bottom line: over the last two years, the Celtics have won 117 regular season games, then failed to get anywhere close to the conference finals, never mind the NBA Finals.
Mazzulla, who was extended last summer, isn’t going anywhere. But it’s time for the Celts to take a long, hard look at their makeup and figure out why they’ve greatly underachieved two years running.
∗ The Bruins’ regular season was an unqualified success. One hundred points and a playoff spot both seemed like pipe dreams last fall and the B’s accomplished both.
The postseason, however, was another matter. The Bruins were shown to have too little skill and not enough jam up front while bowing to Buffalo. Meanwhile, they got little offensive push from their defensemen; it’s not a good sign when a stay-at-home type like Jonathan Aspirot is tied for the most points (two) among blueliners.
Another troubling trend: Pavel Zacha, who had his best season (30 goals), disappeared in the postseason with one goal in six games. As a Bruin, Zacha has just two goals in 26 career playoff games.
Off-season priorities should include finding a No. 1 center (again), a middle-six winger with some scoring touch, and a mobile defenseman.
∗ One of the sillier conspiracy theories to rear its head of late: Robert Kraft was responsible for two WEEI afternoon hosts losing their jobs.
The crackpot idea went like this: Nick “Fitzy” Stevens and Andy Hart went at Mike Vrabel pretty hard for his involvement with Dianna Russini and Kraft demanded their firings. Among the numerous non-sensical factors at work here: Kraft has zero connection with WEEI — his two franchises have their radio rights held by The Sports Hub, WEEI’s competition. So why would Audacy, WEEI’s parent company, care one whit about what Kraft thinks?
More evidence of some people having too much time on their hands.
∗ I’m not sure how they accomplish it — phantom IL stint, perhaps? — but the Red Sox need to get Brayan Bello out of the rotation and into the pitching workshop. He’s not doing them or himself any favors pitching the way he is.
∗ The Cleveland Browns have decided a 25-year old stadium is unacceptable, so they’re building another. At least the team is absorbing much of the construction costs for their new playpen, but still....

∗ It hasn’t been as obvious in recent years because the Canadiens haven’t been much of a factor, but let’s not forget what an insane hockey market Montreal is. The other night, the “get-in” price at Bell Centre for Game 6 with Tampa Bay was better than $2,200. For a first-round game.
