Brenden Rice, the son of San Francisco 49ers Hall of Famer Jerry Rice, was claimed off waivers by the Green Bay Packers according to CBS Sports' Jonathan Jones.
Rice, 24, was a seventh-round pick of the Los Angeles Chargers in the 2024 draft after heavy pre-draft speculation the 49ers might select the USC product because of his lineage. The 49ers passed on Rice, but they did add Terrell Owens' son Terique Owens in undrafted free agency.
The Las Vegas Raiders signed Rice to their practice squad in December of last season before signing a future contract with the Raiders in January. They placed him on waivers where he was scooped up by the Packers.
Green Bay will be his fifth team since the Chargers drafted him. He was let go at final roster cuts in late August of 2025 and joined the New England Patriots' practice squad mid-season. The Patriots released Rice a week later, and the following week he was picked up by the Seattle Seahawks for a two-week stint.
Rice has yet to record a stat after appearing in three games as a rookie. He played three offensive snaps and 10 special teams snaps. In two preseasons Rice has played in seven games and has four catches for 43 yards on 21 targets.
The Packers claimed Brenden Rice to bolster their wide receiver depth after he was released by the Las Vegas Raiders.

The hope of Rice eventually playing for San Francisco is rapidly fading. And given his lack of production or NFL snaps it's hard to imagine he would carve out any significant role even if he did find himself in a 49ers uniform.
