It's always important to attract big names and get major commitments in college football, but when you're talking about a high school prospect who just happens to be the offspring of arguably the most famous player in your school's history, the importance rises.
Fortunately for Kyle Whittingham and the Michigan Wolverines, they were able to get the job done and land a commitment from 3-star cornerback Charles Woodson Jr., the son of Charles Woodson, a Pro Football Hall of Famer, and both a Heisman Trophy winner and national champion at Michigan in 2007.
Woodson Jr. is rated as the No. 804 player and No. 82 safety in the 2027 class, and while he may not be as highly touted as his father was going into college, the expectations will undoubtedly be high.
Woodson still stands today as the last defensive player to win the Heisman trophy, all the way back in 1997. In 2024, Colorado Buffaloes wide receiver/cornerback Travis Hunter won the Heisman, but he was not a primarily defensive player.
After his glorious Michigan career, Woodson went on to be drafted by the Oakland Raiders with the No. 4 overall pick. He would win a Super Bowl, be named a First-Team All-Pro four times, and win the Defensive Player of the Year award in his long career.
Those are some big shoes to fill for Woodson Jr., but he's starting off on the right foot by going to Ann Arbor from the outset.
