"It was good, it felt right, it felt like it was meant to be."
Sonny Styles had just walked into the Washington Commanders' locker room at the team's Ashburn facility and had seen his jersey, his helmet. He was really in the NFL, and it felt so good for him. "So, I am excited," he told the media, sharing about that first time seeing his very own Washington Commanders uniform.
Seeing the uniform had led to excitement. Interestingly enough, Styles then said, when he walked onto the practice field for the first time, he had also had a feeling. "Just grateful, grateful to be here. I know there is a lot of work put in, to get here. But it is just the beginning. So I am just excited to keep putting work in and keep getting better."
Styles was asked what is his message to the fan base, the young rookie calmly, not raising his voice at all, replied, "I'm going to give everything I've got to this team. When I was at Ohio State, I gave everything I had to Ohio State University. I took pride in that. I'm going to take pride in being a Commander and giving everything to this team and do whatever I can by any means necessary to help the team win."
It's refreshing to see a young person who is not naive and thinks that because he has arrived, the team will win. His father, Lorenzo, played linebacker at Ohio State, was drafted in the third round, and played six seasons in the NFL. Listening to Sonny talk, it sounds like Lorenzo taught his son well about hard work, and that nobody owes you anything in this life, other than an opportunity to prove yourself through hard work.
Sonny is grateful to be here; realizing his father, his coaches have all contributed to his opportunity to prove he could get here to the NFL. Sounds like he understands now it is up to him, to make what he can out of his opportunity to make it in the NFL.
