Sonny Styles isĀ in the midst ofĀ someĀ NFL firsts. The draft pick came first, made by Washington at No. 7 overall, followed by the adorned Commanders hat and the Roger Goodell hug. Then came the introductory press conferenceĀ andĀ FridayāsĀ formallyĀ signedĀ rookieĀ contract.
The firstĀ professional Ā practiceĀ came later that afternoon, where he adorned the burgundy and gold No. 52 forĀ the first time.
āIt just felt right,ā Styles told on-site reporters during a Friday press conference. āIt was like it was meant to be.ā
Cornerback Mike Saniristil had the No. 0 he wore at Ohio State,Ā but StylesĀ didnātĀ ask for it. HeĀ wasnātĀ concerned much about that.
āIām not aĀ big numberĀ guy,ā Styles said. āIĀ wasnātĀ big into single digits; I liked No. 0. Mikey has zero, so I was telling CoachĀ (Ken)Ā Norton that, when IĀ lookĀ into the room, with London FletcherĀ (No. 59)Ā on the wall, LaVar AringtonĀ (No. 56)Ā and I think Ken HarveyĀ (No. 57)Ā and Monte ColemanĀ (No. 51), and it was all likeĀ 50sĀ numbers. I wasĀ gonnaĀ take a 50 number, and growing up I would watch Patrick Willis, Ray Lewis,Ā and I thoughtĀ No. 52 would be cool. Then my dadĀ (pointed out that)Ā five plus two is seven, which was the number of my draft pick.Ā I thought it was pretty cool.Ā ThatāsĀ how I landed on it. IĀ didnātĀ have a special number or whatever.ā
All this new will continue well into training camp and into the regular season, whenĀ heāllĀ make his first NFL tackle and his first game-changing play. Thereās work ahead before that happens, from learning ā scheme to the prospect of earning the green dot asĀ on-field defensive play caller.

ThatāsĀ a possibility even as aĀ rookie. Head coach Dan Quinn saidĀ heāllĀ let someone earn it time, by performance under stress ā sometimes Quinn purposelyĀ wonātĀ send in a play call to see how a player reacts ā leadership and what he calls āreal-time processing.ā
Quinn said Styles will be among the inside linebackers learning bothĀ positions, but thereās tons of install,Ā teachingĀ and processing to be done before scheme mastery is expected. Styles went through some 2025 Vikings defensiveĀ film ā Jones worked under Vikings coordinator Brian Flores last season ā but is just getting into the Commanders playbook. The coaches will let him crawl before he walks andĀ walkĀ before he runs,Ā but thereās time for that process to play out.
āThe two inside linebacker spots have similarities, but thereās also some nuances,ā Quinn said in his Friday presser. āDuring the course of the spring and in training camp, weāllĀ workĀ him and some other guys at both of the spots.Ā ThereāsĀ a lot that he can do. And like all the players,Ā weāreĀ going to try to do the best we can to put him in the spots, to really allow them to do their thing, you know, at full speed and atĀ a highĀ level.Ā A lot of times thatĀ takesĀ all the way through camp as well. So,Ā thereāsĀ no limits on what I think he can become, butĀ IāmĀ going to let theĀ whole processĀ really play all the way through becauseĀ thereāsĀ a lot to go over.ā
Styles neverĀ shiedĀ from work, not as a defensive back and not since transitioning to linebacker.
āThe more reps you have, the better you get,ā Styles said. āThis is my third year atĀ linebackerĀ and I want to keep growing at an exponential rate. I had great coaching in college.Ā IāmĀ going to have great coaching here as well.Ā IāmĀ going to keep gettingĀ better and better.ā
