The band is officially back together.
Sophie Cunningham is the latest to re-sign with the Indiana Fever, joining Kelsey Mitchell and Lexie Hull among Fever players that have re-upped with the franchise. Cunningham is back with Indiana on a one-year deal, per Indy Star's Chloe Peterson. ESPN's Alexa Philippou was first to report that Cunningham had re-signed.
Cunningham averaged 8.6 points, 3.5 rebounds and 1.2 assists per game last season, while shooting 46.9% from the field, 43.2% from 3-point range and 87.5% from the free-throw line. The 6-foot-1 guard played in 30 games and started 13 last season with the Fever before her season ended with an MCL tear.
“We had a really special group last year and it was an incredible first season for me in Indy. I loved everything about my teammates and the Fever organization,” Cunningham said. “We fought through a ton of adversity, and it was important to me that we have a chance to see through what we started. I have a feeling this is going to be another special season, so I’m excited to get things started and to, of course, keep playing in front of the best fans in the WNBA. Let’s get spicy!”
Fever general manager Amber Cox commented on the re-signing.
"I think she’s always willing to step in and do whatever it takes to win.
“…When you have a shooter like Sophie, somebody who’s consistently at the top of the league every single year in terms of her effectiveness from beyond the arc, that really helps everybody else too. Everything she brings to the table as a competitor, I think will impact us.”
Cunningham has played in 212 career WNBA regular-season games, starting 105. The Missouri alum holds career averages of 7.9 points, 2.8 rebounds and 1.4 assists per game on 42.8% field goal shooting, 37.2% 3-point shooting and 86.1% free-throw shooting.
