Southern defeated No. 5 Fort Hill 2-0, with Hayden Williams throwing a complete game and allowing only four hits. The Rams scored both runs in the sixth inning, aided by an error and an RBI groundout.
OAKLAND — Two Southern runs in the sixth were enough for Hayden Williams to lead the Rams to a 2-0 win over No. 5 Fort Hill on Saturday.
Williams plated the first on an RBI groundout, and the second cam across on an error on a bouncing ball off the bat of Cole Parks.
Williams needed just 88 pitches for his complete-game gem, tossing seven shutout frames of four-hit ball with six strikeouts and three walks.
Cade Leader also doubled for Southern (5-4, 2-3 Western Maryland Athletic Conference), and JD Nesselrodt singled twice.
Fort Hill right-hander Bobby Brauer pitched a dandy of his own. Brauer allowed two runs (one earned) on six hits in six innings, striking out four and walking four.
Brauer also went 2 for 3 with a double at the dish.
Fort Hill (5-2-1, 3-2 WestMAC) hosts Keyser (2-8) on Monday at 4:30 p.m.
Southern is at Petersburg (3-6) on Monday at 4:30 p.m.
No. 5 Fort Hill 18, Hancock 0
CUMBERLAND — No. 5 Fort Hill scored at least two runs in every inning, including a nine-run second, to rout Hancock in five innings Friday.
The Sentinels racked up 17 hits. Colt Resh and Cameron Hook had three hits each, and Carson Bender, Coye Resh, Landen Richardson and Levi Bowles all had two-hit games.
Richardson doubled twice and had four RBIs, Colt Resh and Bender tripled and drove in three runs apiece, Brady O'Neal doubled and had three ribbies, Jake Rice doubled and had two RBIs, and Brauer doubled.
Rice picked up the win in middle relief, tossing two scoreless innings to follow Coye Resh's two shutout frames to start. Hook didn't allow a run in his lone inning of work in the fifth.
Chandler Buskirk accounted for two of Hancock's three hits, both singles. Braxtyn Hohn was the losing arm.
Moorefield 8, No. 3 East Hardy 4
MOOREFIELD, W.Va. — Moorefield needed just three base hits to plate six runs during a decisive fourth inning against No. 3 East Hardy Friday.
Blake Snyder led off the frame with a single, and two walks, a hit-by-pitch and an error followed before Oliver Crites drove in two with a single to put Moorefield ahead 6-2. A two-out dropped-third strike tacked on another tally.
That was more than enough run support for Matthew Iman, who allowed two runs on six hits across six innings. He struck out 12 and walked three in a winning effort.
The Yellow Jackets (7-4) snapped a five-game skid to East Hardy (6-3).
Mason Hamilton went 3 for 4 with a triple to lead the Cougars' lineup. Evan Hamilton scored twice.
Gage Dove was tabbed with the loss on the mound.
No. 3 East Hardy 21-15, Paw Paw 0-0
BAKER, W.Va. — No. 3 East Hardy bounced back with a pair of three-inning romps of Paw Paw on Saturday.
The Cougars began the twinbill with an 18-run first inning in Game 1, and they held Paw Paw (1-4) to one hit across both contests.
East Hardy's Dayton Dove tripled and drove in four runs in the first game, Shayne Sisler doubled and had three ribbies, and Eli Combs also drove in three runs.
Sisler doubled and had four RBIs in the second affair, Levi Price plated three, Evan and Mason Hamilton doubled, and Patrick Mills doubled.
Cole Lantz and Dove were the winning pitchers. Nathan Dick and Conner Kendall took losses on the mound.
East Hardy hosts Berkeley Springs on Monday at 6 p.m.
Paw Paw is at Berkeley Springs on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
Hampshire 10, Doddridge Co. 8
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — A day after taking down one of West Virginia's top Class AAA squads, Hampshire bested Class AA's top team Doddridge County in eight innings Friday at the South Atlantic Bank Invitational in Myrtle Beach.
Doddridge (12-2) is ranked No. 1 in this week's WVMetroNews poll. The Trojans (6-5) defeated PikeView, ranked third in Class AAA, 10-4 on Thursday.
Against the Bulldogs, Hampshire fell behind 3-0 after the first inning but battled back to take a 6-5 lead into the bottom of the seventh.
Doddridge's Luke Rokisky blasted a one-out home run to center field — which would've been a walk-off shot if Zeke McDonald hadn't caught a runner trying to steal at second one pitch prior.
Brayden Hott gave Hampshire the go-ahead tally with a groundout a half-inning later, and the Trojans brought three more in to give an ample cushion to hold off a late rally.
McDonald doubled, and Channing Wilt, Landon Whitacre and Mason Slade had two base hits each.
Wilt was the winning pitcher, allowing three runs (two earned) on three hits in 4 2/3 frames of middle relief.
Rokisky paced the Doddridge sticks going 3 for 4 with two RBIs and four runs.
Tristan Swiger allowed two earned runs in 6 1/3 innings, but he was dealt a no-decision. Caleb Hall took the loss.
Hampshire is at Pendleton County on Monday at 4:30 p.m.
Petersburg 5, Lincoln 3
SHINNSTON, W.Va. — Micah Ertel doubled in a run in the fourth to give the Vikings a 4-3 lead, and Payton Metheny took care of the rest to lift Petersburg past Lincoln on Friday.
Metheny pitched into the seventh and struck out 11, allowing three runs on six hits in 6 2/3 frames. The right-hander was pulled after expending 115 deliveries, and Kaleb Kuhn stranded the bases loaded to ensure the win.
Lukas Wolford hit a two-run homer for Petersburg (3-6) just two batters into the game. Methey had three hits, Broty Sites doubled and singled, Carter Hardy had two singles, and Ertel doubled.
Jacob Holt singled twice for Lincoln (7-3), and Paxton Edwards doubled.
AJ Bart registered as the losing arm after he surrendered four runs (three earned) on six hits in four innings.
Lincoln 4, Moorefield 3
MOOREFIELD, W.Va. — Moorefield had the tying and winning runs on base in the seventh, but the Yellow Jackets came up short against Lincoln on Saturday.
Moorefield had runners on first and second with one out in the seventh before a fielder's choice and a groundout ended the game.
Lincoln's Anthony Belcastro was 2 for 4 with a double and two RBIs.
Jacob Bart was the winning pitcher, allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits in 4 2/3 innings with seven strikeouts and one walk.
Moorefield's Trevor Baldwin took the loss. He allowed four runs (two earned) on six hits in five frames. Eastyn Haines threw two shutout innings in relief.
Baldwin and Crites doubled.
Moorefield hosts Pendleton County on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
Nitro 14, Petersburg 13
KEYSER, W.Va. — Petersburg led 7-1, but Nitro came back to win on a walk-off double by Casey Moore on Saturday at WVU Potomac State.
Nitro scored 12 runs between the fourth and fifth innings to regain the lead. Petersburg pushed two across in the top of the seventh to tie it at 13 before the walk-off knock.
Petersburg's Owen Reel doubled twice and drove in a pair, Broty Sites doubled and had four RBIs, Lukas Wolford doubled and Payton Metheny singled three times.
Wolford was tabbed with the loss on the mound.
Nitro's Noah Ross tripled and doubled. Moore racked up four hits.
Petersburg hosts Frankfort (4-5) on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
Nitro 12, Keyser 1
KEYSER, W.Va. — There was no score after three innings, but Nitro scored 12 over the final three to down Keyser in six frames.
Keyser's Owen Rotruck had two doubles, and Hunter Harr added another. Lucas Williamson was the losing arm.
Nitro's Jonathan Clark allowed a run on three hits in four innings. Ross tripled, and Ryan Zunigan hit safely three times and tallied four ribbies.
Keyser is at Fort Hill (5-2-1) on Monday at 4:30 p.m.
The final score was Southern 2, Fort Hill 0.
Hayden Williams was the standout player, pitching a complete game and allowing only four hits.
Hayden Williams recorded six strikeouts during the game.
Southern's victory was secured by an RBI groundout from Hayden Williams and a run scored due to an error on a bouncing ball hit by Cole Parks.
