For the first time since 2017, the San Antonio Spurs are back in the Western Conference Finals. It took Victor Wembanyama just three years of development to get here too. Despite being this early to an insane championship run in the NBA Playoffs, the face of the league gives the Oklahoma City Thunder a reason to be scared. All of that revolves around a record only David Robinson touched.
Victor Wembanyama is only the second player in NBA Playoffs history to have 200+ points, 100+ rebounds, and 40+ blocks throughout his first 10 postseason games, per ESPN Insights. The only other player to have ever accomplished that feat was also a Spurs legend, David Robinson. The Admiral notched the feat when he was just 24 years old back in the 1990 NBA Playoffs. Wembanyama, on the other hand, has a very different fate. He led the Spurs to an insane 139-109 demolition of the Minnesota Timberwolves, who were led by Anthony Edwards and tried to gun for their third-straight Western Conference Finals.
When solely looking at this NBA Playoffs run, Wembanyama is averaging 20.3 points on an insane 59.2% effective field goal percentage. He is also thriving on the boards to help Coach Mitch Johnson through his 10.7 rebounds per game. To top it all off, he leads all players with his massive average of 4.1 blocks throughout the NBA Playoffs. Clearly, he is playing out of his mind.
The Thunder and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander are battle-tested. But, they have lost the season series 3-1 to the Spurs. In their Christmas game win, Wembanyama was even benched. It is safe to say that the Thunder have a reason to be scared of the Spurs when Wembanyama is on the court.
