SOUTH BEND − A deeper dive into what makes a good college lacrosse short stick defensive midfielder delivers an assortment of job descriptions.
They better be athletic because they work both sides of the field, often making the transition from defense to offense and offense to defense. They better be elite defenders who can shadow the other team’s best offensive weapon. They better be versatile. They need to know how best to facilitate. Be a good teammate. Be a connector. Be relentless.
One word to describe a short-stick defensive midfield may best suit Notre Dame lacrosse senior captain Christian Alacqua. It’s a word that will be on display Saturday in an NCAA Tournamentquarterfinals matchup between No. 2 seed Notre Dame (11-2) and unseeded Johns Hopkins (10-5) on the campus of Hofstra (New York) University (Noon, ESPNU).
Disruptor.
The 6-foot-1, 195-pound Alacqua plays his position with the passion and purpose of a football middle linebacker/strong safety/special teams gunner. Care/dare to venture through the midfield with the ball in stick? Better keep your head on a swivel.
Drop it, and Alacqua will drop you. He may not be the most vocal captain for Notre Dame, but what he lacks in verbal communication, he makes up for in collisions. Saturday’s contest may only be a minute old, maybe two, but that’s never early enough for Alacqua to seek someone to smack. The first five minutes are the most important. For sending a message.
Boom!
“Being a senior captain, the guys kind of rely on you to set the tone early in the game,” Alacqua said earlier this week in a cold and windy and all-but-empty Arlotta Stadium. “Lay a big hit, get in someone’s face. We take pride in being aggressive, being violent on defense.”
Pride in making sure that the other team, no matter the moment, no matter the opponent, understands that the midfield belongs to a Notre Dame team seeking a third national championship in four seasons. Move through at your own risk. Don’t venture in if you don’t want to pay a price.
“We don’t want anyone to mess with us coming down to the middle of the field,” Alacqua said. “We want to be as physical as possible. When you play that way, the other team might be hesitant to do everything they want to do.
“They’re going to back out a little earlier than they usually do.”
The guy in the No. 19 jersey with the short stick casts a long shadow over the opposition. They know. If they don’t, they’ll learn.
Big hits from Alacqua serve myriad purposes. They set the stage for how an afternoon will go for Notre Dame. It also can flip the script if the Irish need it flipped. On April 25, Atlantic Conference rival Syracuse scored four unanswered goals to grab control (7-5) of a critical conference contest against Notre Dame.
Alacqua seethed after each score. It was unacceptable. Something had to change. Something did. Next time Syracuse midfielder Michael Leo ventured near Alacqua, he said hello with a bruising body blow. Their rivalry dates back to their high school days on Long Island, where lacrosse is as important as basketball in Indiana or football in the deep south. Maybe it's more important.
“Guys were a little tense, like (shoot), this is a good Syracuse offense (but) what are we doing here?” Alacqua said. “You lay a big hit, it kind of changed the attitude like ($%#@), yeah, we’re back. This was us.”
That was a 16-11 Irish win. That also was Alacqua, someone who’s not going to score a bunch of goals or smother a bevy of ground balls, but someone whose role is just as important as Notre Dame looks to advance to another NCAA Final Four. He’s not a stats guy − Alacqua has more national championships (two) than career goals (one) − but he’s a key guy.
“He’s going to do his job because he knows how valuable and how important his job is to our success,” said junior All-American defenseman Shawn Lyght. “Christian Alacqua does a great job at doing his job and making us better.”
People notice. Earlier this week, Alacqua was named an honorable mention All-American by Inside Lacrosse. It marks the sixth straight season and eight of the last nine that an Irish SSDM has earned All-American honors.
Big games are no big deal for a Notre Dame program accustomed to everything that they entail. The Irish know the drill. They’ve been down this road. They’ve done this NCAA dance. Saturday’s a big game, sure, but just another game.
Alacqua has worked to remind himself of that this week. It was hard.
Shuart Stadium sits a 10-minute drive up and across the Northern State Parkway from his home in Manhasset. He lost a state championship game – 12-11 in overtime to Leo’s Saint Anthony’s squad, a loss that still stings Alacqua – as a senior at perennial power Chaminade. He watched Notre Dame lose a quarterfinal to Duke at Shuart in 2019.
His collegiate career might end in Hempstead. Alacqua graduates this weekend and plans to enlist in the Army this fall. There will be no next season when this one ends. His two national championship rings and the game might soon be a memory, but Alacqua isn’t thinking that way. As a senior, as a captain, he can’t.
Yes, Alacqua is going home, and that will be cool. You know what will be cooler? Returning to Indiana with his teammates next week for another round of practice and film and focus. During practice this week, during the charter flight home, during pre-game prep, Alacqua has had one overriding thought – this is not his last game.
“If we keep that mindset, that there’s no Plan B, there’s no doubt that we’re going to be playing next weekend,” Alacqua said. “There’s a lot more on the line. Guys are going to grip their sticks tighter, so we preach the opposite. Go out there and have fun.”
And hit somebody.
