The Pittsburgh Steelers could be facing an unexpected shakeup at quarterback — and it may involve a familiar name once again on the move.
If the Steelers were forced to release an official depth chart today, Mason Rudolph would likely sit atop it. With Aaron Rodgers still undecided about his future, Rudolph remains the most stable option currently in the building.
But that stability may not last long.
Speaking Thursday on 93.7 The Fan’s “The PM Team,” Steelers beat writer for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Ray Fittipaldo, suggested Rudolph could ultimately be the odd man out — particularly if Pittsburgh adds another quarterback in the upcoming NFL Draft.
“I think Mason Rudolph would be the odd man out to be honest with you,” Fittipaldo said. “Assuming Aaron Rodgers comes back, we all know they like Will Howard, and we all know they aren’t going to keep four quarterbacks. It would be unfortunate for him, but maybe they could flip him to another team for a sixth- or seventh-round pick that’s looking for another veteran quarterback.”
Fittipaldo’s outlook became clearer when he released , projecting Pittsburgh to select with the first of its two fourth-round picks. The former signal-caller, in his view, would give the Steelers another developmental option with legitimate upside.
“Beck has the size and arm talent to compete in the division,” Fittipaldo noted. “McCarthy and Khan have talked up Will Howard this offseason, but Beck gives them another developmental quarterback with the potential to start someday.”
Under that scenario, Pittsburgh’s quarterback room would consist of Rodgers, Howard and Beck — leaving Rudolph on the outside looking in.
It would mark yet another turn in Rudolph’s winding tenure with the franchise. Originally selected in the second round of the 2018 draft, he spent five seasons in Pittsburgh before departing, only to return for a second stint.
Still, the situation remains fluid. The Steelers could opt to carry four quarterbacks, particularly if they value veteran insurance behind Rodgers. That decision may hinge on how aggressively they pursue the position during draft weekend.
Notably, Pittsburgh hosted several quarterback prospects on pre-draft visits, including , Cole Payton, , and Beck — a clear indication the organization is doing its homework on the class.
For now, Rudolph remains — at least on paper — the Steelers’ starter or backup. But if Fittipaldo’s projection proves accurate, that status could change quickly as Pittsburgh reshapes its quarterback room for the future.
