The Pittsburgh Steelers used a first-round pick in 2023 on Broderick Jones.
This year, they used a first-rounder on the guy who might replace him.
Pittsburgh brought in Max Iheanachor, another tackle, with the 21st pick in the 2026 NFL Draft.
Given Jones' injury troubles, that could be writing on the wall in Pittsburgh.
"Mere days before the draft, ESPN's Adam SchefterĀ reportedĀ that Jones had suffered a setback while recovering from hisĀ neck injury, and that his 2026 training camp and Week 1 availability were in question," ESPN's Ben Solak wrote in a new article on Wednesday. "Then the Steelers selected Arizona State tackleĀ Max IheanachorĀ in the first round (admittedly after trying and failing to draft a receiver). One week later, the SteelersĀ declinedĀ Jones' fifth-year option."

That certainly all sounds like a situation where the Steelers are preparing for a change.
"Jones' play was already shaky enough that an early pick on a developmental tackle would have been more than justified," Solak writes. "His 85.0% pass block win rate was 65th of 68 qualified tackles last season. But now that his long-term health is in question, the Steelers urgently needed a succession plan. Assuming Jones' neck injury remains a factor, Iheanachor will likely get first-team reps in training camp and accordingly an inside track to start in Week 1. If he holds his water, it would be surprising to see Jones get back on the field as the starter once he finally returns to health."
Pittsburgh was helped, frankly, by the fact that Jones wasn't very good before his injury. The Steelers aren't really able to hope for a return to some magnificent form.
If anything, this just accelerated their need for change, but that could've been on its way, anyway.
Iheanachor has a cool story, having picked up football quite late after previously being a soccer goalie. And now, maybe sooner rather than later, he could be starting for the Steelers.
