One of the biggest questions for the Steelers heading into the NFL draft is whether they will acquire a quarterback. Pittsburgh doesn’t necessarily have to select one with its 21st overall pick, but there's a good chance they could consider taking one at some point, possibly even in the later rounds. ESPN's Brooke Pryor has identified players to watch in this scenario.
In Pryor's column on Wednesday, she mentioned a few players that the Steelers could consider adding through the NFL draft, including Garrett Nussmeier as a potential candidate.
"Another name to watch is LSU quarterback Garrett Nussmeier. While the Steelers have yet to host Nussmeier on a predraft visit, McCarthy traveled to Baton Rouge for the signal-caller's pro day on March 23," Pryor wrote.
"At 6-foot-2, Nussmeier is smaller than the other guys in the Steelers' quarterback room, but his big arm and knack for throwing on the move could make him a good fit for McCarthy's system. Plus, it doesn't hurt that McCarthy is plenty familiar with the Nussmeier family because he coached with Nussmeier's father, Gary, during his tenure with the Dallas Cowboys. Garrett Nussmeier even landed with the Steelers in the second round of Miller's seven-round mock draft."
Nussmeier played five seasons at LSU, but started for only two full seasons. Over the course of 40 career games, he tallied 7,699 passing yards, with 52 touchdowns and 24 interceptions.
Many draft analysts had Nussmeier pegged as the top quarterback heading into last season, but injuries plagued him along the way, causing his draft stock to take a hit.
