Playing time was tough to come by for Sam Webb the last couple years as he was behind all-state catcher Enzo Infelise on the depth chart for Providence.
Now, not only is Webb finally getting his chance, the senior catcher is hitting in the cleanup spot for the Celtics. Quite the leap from the bench.
“It’s awesome,” Webb said. “Honestly, there is pressure hitting in the middle of the lineup after not playing much before, but you just have to overcome it for your guys.”
Webb, a Wisconsin-Parkside recruit, is doing a fine job of that.
He delivered the biggest hit in one of the Celtics’ biggest wins of the season Thursday, ripping a go-ahead two-run double in the seventh inning as Providence rallied for a 6-5 win over crosstown rival Lincoln-Way Central in a Do It Stevie’s Way Tournament pool-play game in New Lenox.
Heartland recruit Sammy Atkinson went 3-for-4 with three runs and two triples, including a leadoff triple that sparked a three-run seventh as the Celtics (16-14) came back from a 5-3 deficit.
Kankakee Community College commit Landon Ehman finished 2-for-4 with an RBI, while Mason Almazan allowed one run over the final two innings to earn the victory on the mound.
“Me and coach (Mark) Smith usually just have a little fist bump after the game, but he came up to me after the game and gave me a big hug and said, ‘We needed this one,’” Atkinson said. “We truly did. This is the kind of game that can turn a team from on its back to thriving again.”
Luke Tingley went 2-for-2 with two runs and a double for the host Knights (14-14). Illinois Wesleyan recruit Conor McCabe finished 2-for-3 with an RBI single, while threw a strong 5 1/3 innings, striking out four and allowing three earned runs.
Sam Webb excelled in his starting role, hitting cleanup and making significant contributions, including a two-run double in a recent game.
Providence won the game against Lincoln-Way Central 6-5, with Webb hitting a go-ahead two-run double in the seventh inning.
Sam Webb was previously behind all-state catcher Enzo Infelise on the depth chart for Providence.
Sam Webb is a recruit for the University of Wisconsin-Parkside.

The result means Hinsdale Central wins the pool to advance to the Do It Stevie’s Way Tournament semifinals while both the Celtics and Knights will play consolation games.
Webb delivered the big blow with runners on second and third and no outs in the seventh, ripping a two-run double to the gap in left-center to give the Celtics the lead.
“I had been struggling a bit,” Webb said. “I just tried to stay short and I ended up driving it into the gap. I love coming through. I love seeing the guys get energy and getting up and excited.”
Webb leads the Celtics in home runs with three and is tied for second with 18 RBIs.
“It hasn’t been easy,” Smith said. “He’s been behind an all-state catcher the last two years. He’s getting his opportunity this year and he’s really swinging the bat well of late.
“He’s had some big hits for us.”
Webb spent his past years closely observing Infelise, who is now playing at Cincinnati.
“I learned how to carry myself,” Webb said. “Enzo’s got one of the best bat-to-ball skill sets that I’ve ever seen, so I just watched his presence in the box and stuff like that and kind of took how he approached the game and tried to implement it into my game.”
Atkinson, who was Providence’s only returning starter from last season, has been thrilled about Webb stepping up and being another senior leader on a young team.
“Seeing how hard he’s worked and he’s finally getting his opportunity, it’s fantastic to see somebody like that make the most of it,” Atkinson said. “He nothing but deserves it.”
Webb hopes the dramatic victory will spark some late-season Celtics magic.
“We’re trying to get everybody’s confidence up and get everyone feeling it for the playoffs because that’s when it matters,” Webb said. “We’ve been struggling a bit in the regular season.
“But when we all come together and play as a team, we’re dangerous.”
