Steve Kerr makes telling future admission after Warriors’ playoff exit

The Golden State Warriors wrapped up their 2025-26 NBA season with a 111-96 loss to the Phoenix Suns on Friday night, and the defeat brought more than just playoff elimination.

Head coach Steve Kerr openly wondered if his time with the franchise might be coming to an end.

Kerr called the Warriors a “fading dynasty” during the regular season, a label that felt harsh but accurate. The team never found consistency this year. They started with real expectations, got a brief spark from a vintage Play-In win on Wednesday, but couldn’t keep it going.

The loss at the Mortgage Matchup Center closed the book on a season that raised serious questions about the future. According to KNBR, Kerr didn’t dodge those questions after the game.

“I don’t know what’s going to happen,” Kerr said. “I still love coaching, but I get it. These jobs all have an expiration date. There is a run that happens, and when the run ends, sometimes it’s time for new blood and new ideas.”

Warriors coaching change possible after Steve Kerr’s contract expires

Kerr plans to take a week or two before making any decisions. After that, he’ll sit down with owner Joe Lacob and general manager Mike Dunleavy Jr. to talk through what comes next.

Kerr signed a two-year, $35 million extension back in 2024, and that deal ran out after Friday’s loss. He’s technically a free agent now among NBA coaches.
