Steve Kerr not expected to return as coach after leading Warriors to 4 NBA titles

Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr owns a total of nine NBA championships as a player and coach.

He won five crowns with Michael Jordan’s Chicago Bulls and Tim Duncan’s San Antonio Spurs in the 1990s and early 2000s before leading Steph Curry’s Warriors to four titles since 2015.

According to an NBC Sports Bay Area report, Kerr’s incredible career may end in the coming days. Golden State’s season came to a close on Friday, April 17, with a loss to the Phoenix Suns in the NBA play-in tournament.

“The general belief among the Warriors … and around the league since the weekend is that Kerr will be comfortably jobless after meeting with [Warriors CEO Joe] Lacob and [GM Mike] Dunleavy. Most expect a decision in a matter of days, not weeks,” NBC’s Monte Poole reported.

Kerr is 604-353 in 12 seasons at Golden State and is the winningest coach in franchise history. His teams made five consecutive trips to the NBA Finals, winning in 2015, 2017 and 2018. Then the Warriors returned to win a fourth title in 2022.

On Monday, April 20, Warriors star Draymond Green, a member of the team during Kerr’s entire tenure, agreed with Poole’s report, saying he doesn’t expect Kerr back.

“I think not, just because it just feels like that,” Green said on “I hope he’s our coach next year. … But I don’t know, man. It felt like that was it.”
