Detroit — General manager Steve Yzerman was direct and left no doubt: He was disappointed with how this season transpired.
After missing the playoffs for the 10th consecutive season — and for Yzerman, his seventh year in that timeframe — the Wings need to get better all the way around.
Red Wings general manager Steve Yzerman speaks to the media Thursday in Detroit.
"Ultimately it's incumbent about me and my staff to improve the team," Yzerman said Thursday during a season-ending press conference. "We need to improve in certain areas. Goal scoring, particularly five-on-five, collectively, if you're watching the playoffs the intensity and determination needed to be successful to make the playoffs."
Yzerman said he spoke with owner Chris Ilitch and the Ilitch family "a few days ago" and remarked ownership was disappointed "with the way the season played out."
More discussion will take place with ownership in the near future, said Yzerman.
"I don't think I'm going to sit and hope for the best," Yzerman said. "I'm very disappointed with how this season played out, the last seven years. I intend to do my job to the best of my ability and to address areas. I intend to see this through."
