Stones to bring curtain down on ten-year City stay this summer
John Stones will leave Manchester City in the summer, bringing an end to a memorable and hugely successful ten-year stay at the Etihad .
Having joined City in 2016 where the English central defender became Pep Guardiola’s second signing, Stones has gone to make 293 appearances in what has been a magnificent decade of service to date.
The 31-year-old’s huge contribution across the most sustained and successful era in the Club’s history stands without question.
To date, Stones has helped City win 19 major trophies, including six Premier League titles, one UEFA Champions League, two FA Cup triumphs, five Carabao Cup successes, three Community Shields, a FIFA Club World Cup and a UEFA Super Cup winner’s medal.
Across that period, Stones has also contributed 19 goals and nine assists and there could yet be more silverware to come with City still in the hunt for success in both the Premier League and FA Cup.
Armed with wonderful technique, a sublime passing range allied to a superb work rate and astute reading of the game, Stones was in many ways the very embodiment of Pep Guardiola’s City.
Such was his natural talent and tactical flexibility that Stones’ City career later saw him often deployed in a hybrid role which saw him move into the middle of the City engine room to great effect, not least in the 2023 UEFA Champions League final.
