The San Francisco Giantsâ rotation has yet another concern. Logan Webb was sent to the 15-day injured list Saturday afternoon with bursitis in his right knee. The move is retroactive to Wednesday.
Webb had exited his most recent start on Tuesday with discomfort in his knee, throwing only four innings before being forced out of the game. He allowed six runs, raising his ERA to 5.06. That punctuated what has been an abysmal 2026 so far for the right-hander.
His metrics have been just as bad as this performance, with the righty posting below-average marks in everything except for his fastball run value (70th percentile). The run value of his offspeed pitches has taken a sharp decline, from being ranked in the 98th percentile in 2025 to the 38th this year.
Itâs not all bad. To be fair to Webb, some of it has been bad luck. His xERA is half a run lower than his actual ERA, comparing a 4.57 xERA to his 5.06 actual mark. But thatâs not much better for a pitcher whoâs long been viewed as one of the best in the National League.
The Giants have been struggling lately, and the loss of Webb does nothing to help matters despite his difficulties lately. He shouldnât be out too long, with knee bursitis typically taking 1-2 weeks to recover from. Hopefully, the stint on the IL should help Webb reset for the rest of the season.
In a corresponding move, Trevor McDonald was recalled from Triple-A. Heâs pitched well in recent seasons and marks a continuing trust in the Giantsâ younger players to step up this year. He was called up to start against the San Diego Padres last week and held the club to just one run on two hits across seven full innings. He struck out seven batters in that start, showing plenty of promise.

The righty has performed phenomenally in the past when called up to the big-league level. McDonald owns a 1.44 ERA across 25 innings. But itâs been a completely different story in the minors. The right-hander owns an ERA over 5.00 in each of the last two seasons (5.31, 2025; 5.40, 2026). That lack of consistency has contributed to a hesitancy from the front office to trust McDonaldâs production.
Regardless, heâll get a few opportunities to pitch until Webb returns. Itâs possible that he could supplant one of the current pitchers in the rotation if he performs well enough. That could force someone else out once Webb makes his return. That could be Adrian Houser or Tyler Mahle, both of whom have struggled mightily in their debut seasons with San Francisco.
