Aden Holloway could have a path to return to Alabama basketball, pending the outcome of his criminal case.
Holloway was arrested for felony marijuana possession on March 16, just days before the start of the NCAA tournament. He was suspended from the program and banned from campus following his arrest.
His college basketball future is now in flux. Holloway was originally scheduled to be arraigned, but he waived that court date as he plans to plead not guilty to four charges.
Speaking to the media at a PGA Tour Champions event in Birmingham, Crimson Tide coach Nate Oats said the team is holding a scholarship for Holloway, depending on the outcome of his legal case.
"There's a lot of stuff you've got to sort through on the legal side of things before we kind of get to that question," Oats said, per ESPN. "We've got to let that play out. There will be a scholarship still once all that clears, and hopefully he's able to get that positive outcome. But we've kind of got to let the process play through.
"We've got scholarships open. If this happens, we've got to pivot this way. If this happens, we've got to pivot that way. We've definitely got a plan for if we have (Allen or Holloway), or both, or neither back. It does make it a little more difficult with the timing of it all, but we've got a plan each way."
A transfer addition in 2024 from rival Auburn, Holloway started 27 games for Alabama last season and averaged 16.8 points per game, ranking second on the team. He also led the team in three-point shooting percentage at 43.8%.
Without him, the Crimson Tide reached the Sweet 16 but were eliminated by eventual champion Michigan.
Holloway's status in 2026-27 likely depends on whether he's found guilty, but if he isn't, it seems as if there will be a path for him to return to Alabama's team next season.
