The Washington Huskies defeated Penn State 5-4 in a doubleheader opener, highlighted by Ethan Swidler's three-run homer in the eighth inning. Jackson Thomas secured his third win of the season with a strong pitching performance.
In the first part of a double header against the Penn State Nittany Lions, the Washington Huskies were able to hold on for a 5-4 win on the road in State College, Pennsylvania.
Coach Eddie Smith's team was able to pull away late, thanks to a three-run home run off catcher Ethan Swidler in the eighth inning as part of a 1-for-2 day with a walk on a day where Washington got a strong start from Jackson Thomas.
The only damage he allowed came in the fifth inning, when he let up a two-run home run to shortstop Preston Yaucher on his way to his third win of the season. Over 6 innings, he let up just those 2 runs on 4 hits with a walk and 5 strikeouts, before giving way to reliever Tommy Brandenberg, who allowed 2 runs on a home run to Bryce Molinaro over the next 2 innings on 3 hits and 2 strikeouts.
Carson Boesel earned his first save of the year after working the ninth inning with a hit and a strikeout.
Designated hitter Colton Bower also chipped in with a 2-for-5 performance with a pair of doubles, while left fielder Jackson Hotchkiss went 1-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI, which came on a sacrifice fly in the first inning.
Out of the bullpen, Kyle Emmons took the loss for the Nittany Lions after working 2 innings and letting up 4 runs on 3 hits with 2 walks and a strikeout.
With the win, the Huskies improved to 22-27 on the year and 11-14 in Big Ten play. The two teams will return to the field for the second installment of their doubleheader shortly.
