2026 WNBA GM survey: League execs prefer Paige Bueckers over Caitlin Clark as franchise cornerstone
WNBA GMs prefer Paige Bueckers over Caitlin Clark as franchise cornerstone ahead of 2026 season.
The Syracuse men's lacrosse team faces a pivotal moment as their senior class, which has been building towards this season since 2020, aims to restore the program's former glory after a challenging period.

This build-up has been a long time coming.
For the senior class, it’s been even more than four years in the making. Most of them committed to SU back in the fall of 2020, when they were high school juniors dreaming of Dome Saturdays and Syracuse lacrosse glory.
When they arrived, they walked into the program’s lowest point since the mid-1970’s. But that didn’t slow down the expectations of a return to form that the school and the fanbase were so desperate for. The highest ranked class in the country, and one of SU’s best in a long time, their 10 players in the Top 100 meant they had the ability to re-stock the relatively bare shelves quickly and lay the foundation for a return to the top.
They wasted no time in making progress, improving their win totals and year-end result every season. Along the way, they’ve helped achieve the program’s first ACC title (regular season or tournament) since 2018 and first Final Four since 2013.
They’ve accomplished so much, says this observer, but it’s all been a process of kicking the can down the road until this exact month in this exact year. It’s their Judgment Day; their last chance to bring home the ultimate glory and join the ranks of the legends who’ve done it before them.
It’s also not something they’ve shied away from at any point, including coming into this season. Joey Spallina memorably referred to winning a national championship in the preseason as the “only thing we really give a sh-t about”. The team was very clearly all-in on the title-or-bust mental approach, led by the seniors in their final go-round.
It’s not really difficult to take that approach when you collectively possess the talent and experience that this ‘Cuse team does. It’s all there for them to get the job done, and when it’s fully on, there’s no one in the country they can’t compete with.
But as they approach their Judgment Day, they do so without having shown us the proof via the pudding of this year’s team. Because in a lot of the season’s biggest moments, the talent has clashed with the sloppiness and the lack of discipline; characteristics you might not expect to associate with a senior-laden team that has these kinds of aspirations.
It happened in the second-halves of both the regular-season finale and the ACC Tournament semifinal, both times after largely well-played first halves. They were puzzling, mistake-filled performances for a team on this kind of stated mission.
The other part of the lack of proof has been the lack of wins over top competition. They’ve been able to hang for a while at times, but the bottom line is they’ve gone 0-4 so far against the teams seeded 1, 2 and 3 in this tournament. You never know how May Madness is going to play out, but there’s a very good chance that making a run to Memorial Day would involve having to play and beat some if not all of those opponents.
And this time, there is no next tournament to look to should things go wrong. They’re officially playing lacrosse without a safety net, and the price to pay is the end of their Syracuse careers.
We know about the talent, but if they’re going to have a chance to achieve their goal, they’re going to need to also show the fortitude to make plays and avoid mistakes late in the game.
It’s all come down to this. One final shot at glory. And it starts with one more Dome game this Sunday evening.
