The biggest question facing every WNBA team in training camp
WNBA training camps open with key questions for each team.
Tonie Morgan, a standout basketball player from Tallahassee, is projected to be an early-round pick in the upcoming WNBA Draft after a successful senior season at Kentucky. She averaged 13.8 points and 7.94 assists per game, leading her team to the Sweet 16.
Tonie Morgan is on the verge of achieving her dreams.
The Tallahassee native and former standout basketball player at both Kentucky and Georgia Tech, Morgan projects as an early-round pick and one of the top guards in the upcoming WNBA Draft. She averaged 13.8 points, 7.94 assists, the second-highest average in the country and a program record, and 3.1 rebounds per game as a senior at Kentucky.
Fresh off a run to the Sweet 16 with the Wildcats, Morgan has returned to Tallahassee after a "surreal" few weeks ahead of the WNBA Draft on Monday, April 13.
"It's been surreal. It's been a great way to end my college career, to have a Sweet Sixteen run. We wanted to go farther, but, you know, this is as far as I've been, so I'm very excited about that," Morgan said. "The process heading to the draft, I'm just excited and looking forward to whatever team drafts me, and happy for the opportunity ahead."

Morgan set the single-season assist record for Kentucky in her lone season in Lexington, posting a total of 286 assists in her 36 games played. She was a key figure for a team that ranked as high as No. 6 in the country and went 25-11 and earned a fifth seed in the NCAA tournament.
Morgan totaled 1,756 points in her collegiate career, adding 754 assists and 654 rebounds, and she said her senior season at Kentucky taught her she was built for big moments.
"I learned that I could adapt to different situations that are thrown at me, even though we face adversity during the season, this just showed me that I could keep going, and that allowed me to broadcast my skills on a bigger stage," Morgan said. "Sometimes Coach [Kenny] Brooks would say, 'On a bigger stage, you can get exposed.' I like to say that we came out on the better side of that.
So I was happy that we had the year we did. I'm happy that I had the year I had. I just wouldn't have given it up for the world."
Her skillset as a distributor, paired with the ability to get to the basket and score in bunches, is why she dominated the collegiate ranks, and it earned her a finalist spot for the Nancy Lieberman Point Guard of the Year award.
Those skills were crafted in Tallahassee, where Morgan was a multi-time All-Big Bend point guard and Player of the Year at Florida High. She played six varsity seasons, making her first appearance as a seventh grader, and helped lead the Seminoles to the state semifinals as a senior.

Reflecting on her journey from prep phenome to draft hopeful, Morgan said she'd tell her younger self to slow down and enjoy the process. Now, on the doorstep of professional basketball, Morgan is grateful to be back home and surrounded by familiar faces.
"It's gonna mean a lot. I just have support from my hometown, home friends, home family. Just having that support and knowing that everybody was cheering me on for my journey to where I am now, it just means a lot," Morgan said. "Having a great village is something that any kid growing up just yearns for."
The village that Morgan has will surround her on Monday night as she awaits a call from one of the WNBA's 15 franchises. She said whoever drafts her is getting a hard worker who's going to do anything to get on the court and help a team win games.
As for the moment itself, Morgan hasn't allowed herself to think about what the draft call will feel like. She's opting to live in the moment as she prepares for the next step in her basketball journey.
"I'm definitely a living-in-the-moment person. I'm just trying not to think about it. Just be where my feet are today," Morgan said. "When Monday comes, Monday comes, and I'll be excited and thrilled for whatever's there for me."
