Terry Rozier new charges, explained: NBA player facing additional allegations in sports gambling scandal

Rozier pleaded not guilty to the charges against him on Dec. 8. While his lawyers have attempted to get the case dismissed, claiming the former NBA guard is being prosecuted through an "invalid" legal theory, the case remains active. A judge has not yet ruled on Monday's motion to dismiss.

Rozier, meanwhile, was waived by the Heat in early April, nearly six months after he was charged. He had continued to play for Miami after reports in early 2025 that he was under federal investigation for potential gambling violations, and the NBA itself could not establish a violation from its own investigation.

If new charges are indeed filed, Rozier's NBA career could become even more of an afterthought as he tries to fend off serious allegations.

What did Terry Rozier do?

Prosecutors initially accused Rozier of conspiring to leave a March 23, 2023 game against the Pelicans early to allow others to profit, claiming individuals were "parlaying the unders on Rozier's statistics, including rebounds."

The new indictment will reportedly allege Rozier accepted an illegal bribe related to sports betting, though the exact details won't be clear until the charges are officially filed.

NBA gambling scandal

Rozier, Billups and former NBA player Damon Jones were among 34 individuals indicted as part of a wide-ranging sports gambling scandal in October.

Federal prosecutors alleged two different schemes: one to allegedly manipulate NBA games for betting purposes, which Rozier is implicated in, and another to allegedly rig poker games, which Billups is implicated in. The poker scheme is alleged to involve members of Mafia crime families.

Jones, who was charged in connection with both schemes, is set to enter a guilty plea on Tuesday.
