Texans’ wide receiver depth lets them manage Tank Dell’s return on their clock

What stands out most about Houston’s latest Tank Dell update isn’t the timeline, but the tone.

DeMeco Ryans made it clear, saying “it’s not about how quickly he returns” and that Dell will be back “at some point this year.” That tells you everything you need to know about where the Texans are mentally these days.

The Texans wrapped up 2025 ranked 18th in total offence and 14th in passing, and it was clear why Dell is so important. Nico Collins remained the primary option, but they missed the added speed and playmaking that Dell brings.

Without him, things became more predictable for Houston. Defences found it easier to adjust when protection broke down, and it wasn’t just his ability to catch the ball that was missed – it was how he changed the pace of the game.

Houston takes the long game with Dell’s recovery

Ryans left no doubt about the approach, emphasising that Dell’s long-term physical readiness is the priority. That’s the kind of thinking you hear from teams planning for deep playoff runs, not ones rushing to fill offseason gaps.

Houston now has genuine postseason ambitions. So taking a careful route with rehab isn’t just being cautious – it’s smart roster management.

Houston is now in a position where it doesn’t need to rush Dell back just to keep the receiver room functioning. Collins is still the main option, but the Texans have added more reliable targets around Stroud, so they aren’t forced into a corner if one player isn’t available.

That’s one of the benefits of having more depth. It allows coaches to take their time with players coming off significant injuries without feeling pressured to hurry them back onto the field.
