Texas A&M's 2025-2026 season ended with a second-round loss in the NCAA Tournament, as the 10-seed Aggies fell to 2-seed Houston, but that result was expected, and the fact that first-year head coach Bucky McMillan led his first roster, completely built from the transfer portal, to the postseason is quite the feat.
As soon as the offseason began, it was always expected that McMillan and his staff would be back in rebuild model, losing key starters to expired eligibility, including senior forward Rashaun Agee, guard Rylan Griffen, and several key bench players.
However, when the transfer portal officially opened last Tuesday, the losses of guard Josh Holloway and sharpshooter Rubén Dominguez, who has since committed to Xavier, didn't sting as much given that forwards Zach Clemence and Jamie Vinson announced their returns, while the Aggies landed a massive commitment from Kansas State transfer guard PJ Haggerty.
With Haggerty now in the fold, the Aggies have gained momentum and are now in the running for several intriguing transfer players, now including former Tennessee forward Cade Phillips, who, despite averaging 3.8 points per game last season, shot 65% from the field, standing 6'9" and 221 pounds.
According to On3's Joe Tipton, Phillips has visited Texas A&M and Alabama thus far, while the Aggies are currently trending to land the incoming senior big man.
"Tennessee transfer Cade Phillips has visited Texas A&M and Alabama. Itâs unclear if he will take anymore visits at this time. The Tide were the early favorite, but it sounds like Aggies currently have the momentum."
While Phillips' role in the Aggie offense is currently undefined, front-court depth is key, while McMillan expected Jamie Vinson to take another step in his development and potentially earn a starting role before the season begins.
