In just a few short years, Mike Elko transformed Texas A&M from a program on the outside looking in on the College Football Playoff to one solidly in the field last season.
Given how the Aggies are recruiting under Elko, that success doesn't seem to be going away anytime.
On Friday, Texas A&M landed the anchor of its 2027 class with a commitment from St. Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale, FL) five-star offensive tackle Mark Matthews.
Matthews chose the Aggies over Georgia, LSU and Miami.
According to 247Sports, Matthews ranks as the No. 3 overall prospect in the 2027 class. The site ranks him as the No. 1 offensive tackle prospect and the No. 1 player out of Florida.
Matthews' varsity career began as a freshman when he primarily started on the defensive line. As a sophomore, he started at left tackle on a team that went 12-3 and won the 5A state championship.
Last season, he anchored the St. Thomas Aquinas offensive line as they repeated as 5A state champions and finished the year 14-1.
Historically, it's hard to argue that any recruiting class in history was better than Texas A&M's for the 2022 recruiting cycle.
That season, the Aggies' group of 30 commitments ranked No. 1 nationally with eight five-star commitments. While this group is still building, the 2027 class, headlined by Matthews looks like it could try to match that 2022 group.
With Matthews' commitment, 13 of Texas A&M's 14 commitments rank as four-star prospects or better. They lead that nation in five-star commitments with five.
Last November, they landed two of those five-stars in Waxahachie (TX) safety JayQuan Snell and St. Frances Academy (MD) cornerback Raylaun Henry. IMG Academy (FL) defensive lineman Zyron Forstall committed to the Aggies on March 31, and they landed another five-star offensive tackle in Kingwood (TX) standout Kennedy Brown on April 26.
