Texas A&M softball defeated top-ranked Oklahoma 8-5 in Game 1 of their SEC series, taking a 1-0 lead. The Aggies rallied after an early deficit, showcasing a strong late-game performance.
The Texas A&M softball team has positioned itself to close the regular season with a statement, opening its final SEC series by rallying past No. 1 Oklahoma in a suspendedâandâresumed Game 1 at Davis Diamond. It took an extra day to finish, but a late surge and a shutdown seventh inning delivered an 8â5 win and a 1â0 series lead.
Coming off a lowâscoring series loss to South Carolina in which only 10 total runs were scored across three games, the Aggies were looking for a response. That challenge grew tougher with the Sooners arriving in College Station, and early on, it looked as if Oklahoma might take control. A&M committed an error in the top of the second inning, and the Sooners capitalized with four runs to build early separation.
The Aggies answered immediately. After Ariel Kowalewski drew a walk, Kelsey Mathis doubled to put two runners in scoring position. Paislie Allen delivered a twoâRBI single to cut the deficit in half heading into the third inning.
Both teams traded scoreless frames before another A&M error allowed Oklahoma to extend its lead to 5â2. The Aggies matched it in the bottom of the fifth when Tallen Edwards ripped a double to score Kennedy Powell from first, trimming the margin to 5â3 as the sixth inning began.
A&M held the Sooners scoreless in the top of the sixth and managed two atâbats before lightning forced a suspension of play, pushing the finish to Friday afternoon.
When the game resumed, the Aggies wasted no time shifting momentum. With one out and a runner on second, Allen moved the runner to third with a sacrifice bunt. Head coach Trisha Ford then turned to her bench, calling on Maddie Sauni to pinch hit, and she delivered again with an RBI single to make it 5â4.
Powell followed with a single, and Edwards tied the game with an RBI single of her own. A walk to Mya Perez loaded the bases for Micaela Wark, who punched a basesâclearing single up the middle to give A&M its first lead at 8â5 entering the seventh.
From there, Sidne Peters slammed the door. The rightâhander struck out backâtoâback hitters and induced a foul out to end the game, securing a signature win and a 1â0 series advantage heading into the weekend.
Texas A&M rallied from an early deficit, scoring late in the game and securing an 8-5 victory over Oklahoma.
The final score was Texas A&M 8, Oklahoma 5.
This win positions Texas A&M to close the regular season strongly and gives them momentum heading into the final SEC series.
