The Texas Longhorns are bringing in a pro to help with scouting. Steve Sarkisian is set to hire former NFL scout Chris Watts. Watts has spent the last four years as a scout for the Steelers. Prior to his tenure in Pittsburgh, he spent 15 years as a scout for the NY Giants.
Watts joined the Steelers for the 2023 NFL Draft scouting cycle as the college scout covering the South. That included the SEC and Texas schools. He was the college scout for the Southwest region for the Giants. His 15 year run included New York's two most recent Super Bowl championships.
Watts left Pittsburgh in March, part of the housecleaning in the wake of the Steelers parting ways with longtime coach Mike Tomlin. He also spent time in the player personnel department for the USFL Birmingham Stallions and six months working for the Senior Bowl. Watts played college football at Langston University in Oklahoma.
It isn't hard to see why Sark would hire a scout with over 20 years working in the NFL covering the South. As the stakes are raised in college football, so is the talent behind the scenes. Now that college teams pay the players, missing on a prospect has more far reaching ramifications. Watts should help make sure Texas hits on talent with even more frequency.
