For better or worse, Victor Wembanyama's Game 4 ejection changed complexion of the series â and his first playoff arc
Victor Wembanyama's first ejection in Game 4 changes playoff series for Spurs.
Texas softball has won its first SEC championship and is now focused on the NCAA Tournament. If Texas and Texas A&M both win their respective regionals, they will face off in a Super Regional series in Austin from May 21-24.
One canât blame Texas softball coach Mike White if he wants to spend just a bit more time living in the past. After all, the Longhorns just won their first SEC championship Saturday by beating Alabama.
But no one can blame White if heâs already living in the present, since his team hosts three squads during the opening weekend of the NCAA Tournament Austin Regional, including a dangerous Big Ten squad in Wisconsin.
So, why is almost every softball fan in the state of Texas â including virtually everyone that dons burnt orange â looking ahead to the Super Regional dates of May 21-24?
Because if Texas (42-10) wins its own regional as the No. 2 overall seed and Texas A&M wins its College Station Regional as the 15th overall seed, the two SEC teams would renew their blood rivalry in a three-game Super Regional series in Austin to determine a spot in the Womenâs College World Series.
Texas pitcher Teagan Kavan has emerged as the Longhorns' unquestioned ace, and coach Mike White says his team will rely heavily on the sophomore in the postseason, which starts this week at the SEC Tournament in Athens, Ga. (Aaron E. Martinez/American-Statesman)
âI had a pretty good idea that was going to happen, you know?â White said, familiar with the often-mischievous ways of the NCAA Tournament Selection Committee. âIt is what it is. Weâve just got to focus on where we're at in this first weekend and then worry about what's going to happen later down the road. I think, if it does happen to come to fruition, it's going to be a great series, obviously.â
The matchup could renew a historic rivalry in a Super Regional series, determining a spot in the Women's College World Series.

If Texas and the Aggies were to meet in the Super Regionals, the series would mark a rematch of the squadsâ memorable matchup two years ago at McCombs Field, which the Longhorns won 2-1.
But White will worry about the Aggies next week, if needed. For now, he wants to retain the momentum that his squad found while rolling to three wins at this past weekendâs SEC Tournament in Lexington, Kentucky. That trio of triumphs included a resounding 7-1 win in the title game over Alabama, the NCAA Tournamentâs No. 1 overall seed.
âWe peaked at the right time,â White said. âWe had everything happening. Everybody was hitting throughout the lineup. And then the good pitching and defense. ... We were able to contribute in a lot of ways, from a lot of people, both on offense and defense. I think absolutely that finishing with the championship made a big difference in our overall seed.â
Texas will open the NCAA Tournament Friday at 3 p.m. against Wagner, which is making its NCAA Tournament debut. The starr time is tentative.
