Texas State baseball faces Southern Miss this weekend after a tough series against Troy. The Bobcats aim to solidify their position in the Sun Belt standings with a crucial matchup ahead of Coastal Carolina.
Texas State baseball dropped a series to Troy 2-1 this past weekend, falling 12-11 in extra innings in the finale. However, they stayed at second in the Sun Belt standings, as Louisiana took two of three from Southern Miss.
Now the Bobcats and the Golden Eagles on a collision course this weekend in Hattiesburg, Miss. With a matchup against Coastal Carolina looming next weekend, Texas State has an opportunity to prove it belongs in the top rung of the conference.
"They'll be juiced up and ready to go," head coach Steven Trout said after Tuesday's 4-3 win over Houston Christian. "Excited to watch our team go play in that environment."

Here are the key factors that will make or break the weekend for Texas State:
Texas State has been tearing the cover off the ball in conference play. Five of their starting hitters have on-base plus slugging percentages over 1.000 against Sun Belt teams, and the Bobcats have scored over 10 runs five times.
Southern Miss, however, has the best pitching staff in the Sun Belt by ERA. Camden Sunstrom, Colby Allen and Grayden Harris all have ERAs below four, with Sunstrom leading at 2.51. The trio has given up 10 home runs all season; Texas State leads the conference with 71 bombs.
Texas State did sweep through Louisiana a few weeks ago, which ranks third in the conference in ERA. In addition, Sunstrom has shown some vulnerability in his past two outings, giving up five runs against Old Dominion and four unearned runs against Louisiana. But the Golden Eagles' deep pitching staff poses a stark contrast to the Bobcats.

Texas State's arms have been a roller-coaster of results. They struggled against Louisiana-Monroe, allowing 36 runs over three games. Then, it looked like things might've turned a corner after a few solid series against Louisiana, Georgia State and Georgia Southern. Concerns have arisen again following the Trojans putting up 15 and 12 runs in Saturday's doubleheader.
Trout announced Tuesday he's moved starting pitchers Kyle Froehlich and Sam Hall to the bullpen, replacing them with Wade Cooper and Cade Smith. Cooper stepped in Sunday for Hall, holding Troy to four runs (three earned) on six hits in 4⅔ innings of work. Smith pitched three innings of one-hit ball last Friday against the Trojans. He gave up six hits in Game 3, pitching on no days of rest.
The Golden Eagles appear to lack offensive punch, ranking 12th in the Sun Belt in total runs. Texas State is betting on its hottest pitchers, rather than hoping Froehlich and Hall can rediscover their form.
Jesus Tovar has had a weird stretch, pitching on Saturday two weekends in a row and allowing 15 runs between two starts. The Sunday starter initially looked fine against Troy, allowing three runs through 4⅔ innings before things fell apart.
Tovar relies on elite command to get his outs. He's struggled with it the past two weekends, walking five and giving up 15 hits. The Bobcats desperately need Tovar to rediscover his groove, as there doesn't seem to be any other option besides him.
"He's got the stuff. He got the belief in it, right?" Trout said. "One rough day doesn't change a whole lot."
