Aiyana Coleman of Texas State softball set a new program record with her 48th walk of the season during a game against Southern Miss. In a surprising move, Southern Miss intentionally walked her again with the bases loaded, contributing to Texas State's 8-1 victory.
SAN MARCOS — When Texas State softball infielder Aiyana Coleman drew her 48th base on balls of the year during Saturday's 8-1 win over Southern Miss, she broke the program record for walks in a single season. But her 49th free pass was arguably even more stunning.
Down 7-1 with the bases loaded in the sixth inning, Southern Miss intentionally walked Coleman rather than allow her an opportunity for a walkoff hit that would have prompted the mercy rule. Texas State's lead grew to 8-1 as Coleman jogged down the first-base line for the second time that day. The senior said she was surprised, thinking they would at least try to pitch to her.
"I told her, that's mad respect," Texas State head coach Ricci Woodard said.

Coleman leads the Sun Belt in walks, with teammate Keely Williams in second, trailing by 15. She's second in the nation in the statistic, behind only UCLA's Megan Grant, who has 52.
Coleman transferred in from Texas A&M in 2025 and immediately shattered Texas State's record books. She set the program single-season record for home runs, RBIs and slugging percentage, leading the Bobcats to a Sun Belt regular season title. Coleman hit her 14th home run of the season Saturday, a three-run shot. She needs four more in the next eight games to break the record she set in 2025.
