Texas Tech's NiJaree Canady was pulled in the 3rd inning after allowing a run against Arizona State. Following her exit, Arizona State scored three more runs, including two home runs.
Sometimes, the best thing to do is nothing.
That's something Texas Tech manager Gerry Glasco may be able to attest to after the Big 12 championship game between Texas Tech and Arizona State. After starting pitcher and preeminent ace NiJaree Canady gave up the first run of the game in the top of the third inning, Glasco pulled Canady in favor of Kaitlyn Terry after just 43 pitches.
From there, things went south, as Arizona State proceeded to pile on another three runs in the inning, including back-to-back homers from Emily Schepp and Katie Chester. Despite another two hits in the inning, Terry was able to get out of it before it got worse.
Canady, of course, is one of softball's most dominant pitchers. She posted an ERA of 1.25 and a 22-4 record for the Red Raiders this season.
By the bottom of the third inning, Canady was already warming up in the Texas Tech bullpen for Glasco again.
Softball pitchers can reenter after being pulled, giving Canady the ability to return despite the early hook. Glasco likely wanted to make up some ground and use Canady as a closer after the early home run. But after the rest of the third inning, Texas Tech clearly has more ground to make up.
