The Georgia Bulldogs have had some amazing players over the years to help UGA win four national championships (1942, 1980, 2021 and 2022). Despite a rich history, Georgia has just four retired jersey numbers in school history.
Most notably, Georgia retired star running back Herschel Walker's jersey in 1985, which was just a few years after he won the Heisman in 1982. Walker helped Georgia win the 1980 national championship with a gritty performance in the Sugar Bowl against Notre Dame.
Walker is Georgia's all-time leading rusher with 5,259 rushing yards and 52 rushing touchdowns. In Walker's remarkably productive three seasons, he set 11 NCAA records, 16 SEC records and 41 Georgia records. He's considered one of the best, if not the best, college football player of all-time.
Before Walker, halfback Frank Sinkwich had his jersey retired in 1943. Sinkwich dazzled during his three-year career at Georgia from 1940-42. Sinkwich posted over 2,000 career rushing yards and over 2,000 career passing yards. He finished his Georgia career with 30 passing touchdowns and 30 rushing touchdowns. He led Georgia to the a 1942 SEC championship, a national championship and a Rose Bowl win over UCLA.
Halfback Charley Trippi had his jersey retired in 1947. Trippi won the Maxwell Award and finished second in the 1946 Heisman voting. He led Georgia to a perfect 11-0 1946 season that featured a Sugar Bowl win over North Carolina. Trippi finished his Georgia career with 47 total touchdowns and served in the Air Force during the middle of his career. Trippi played at Georgia in 1942 and from 1946-47.
Fullback Theron Sapp is the least well-known player to have his jersey retired at UGA. Sapp played from 1956-58 and helped Georgia snap an eight-game losing streak to Georgia Tech in 1958. He was an All-SEC selection and a team captain. Georgia retired his jersey in 1959.
