The bold claim Phil Mickelson made after the 2023 PGA Championship that has aged terribly

Of course, the six-time major winner left no room for debate with his final word. And, for a little while, it was hard to argue.

There were three LIV players in the top five at The Masters the previous month. Meanwhile, Bryson DeChambeau finished tied for fourth when Koepka won at Oak Hill.

DeChambeau would become the second LIV player to win a major at the US Open the following year.

But since then, Mickelson’s claim has come back to haunt him.

The majors have not been kind to LIV players over the last two years. Jon Rahm has failed to add to his tally of two major wins since signing with LIV.

Meanwhile, Cam Smith was the only player to miss the cut at all four majors in 2025.

Dustin Johnson‘s last top 20 finish in the majors came back in 2023.

And of course, Tyrrell Hatton became the only LIV player to finish inside the top 30 at The Masters earlier this month.

DeChambeau missed the cut at Augusta National after a torrid two days.

LIV’s defenders will point to the likes of Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas as proof that plenty of PGA Tour players are struggling in the majors too.

It must also not be forgotten that Rory McIlroy, Scottie Scheffler, and Cameron Young barely played in the weeks leading into The Masters before all going on to finish in the top three. That is hardly a victory for the PGA Tour.

Nevertheless, just one of the last 11 majors have been won by a LIV player since Mickelson’s post.

And with the superstar signings seemingly a thing of the past, it appears that few players ever truly agreed with the all-time great’s view.
