If any of you are still analyzing whether pending UFA Charlie Coyle could help the Detroit Red Wings, you can close down those discussions.
Multiple reports say he has agreed to a six-year extension for $36 million with the Columbus Blue Jackets.
As a 6-foot-3, 220-pound center, with 20 goals and 58 points last season, Coyle was an option for the Red Wings who are looking for bigger, grittier forwards who can score.
Coyle, 34, has only shows three 20-plus goal seasons in his lengthy career, but two have come in the last three season. He has been playing among the Blue Jackets top six forwards. But for much of his career, Coyle has been viewed as a third line performer.

The bottom line: the Red Wings will look in the UFA market, but their best chance to upgrade the top six forwards will be through trades.
