Steve Yzerman has been named the eighth best player in the Canadian Hockey League over the past 50 years as part of the CHL's anniversary celebration. He played two seasons with the Peterborough Petes before being drafted by the Detroit Red Wings in 1983.

Steve Yzerman Thursday was named the eighth best Canadian Hockey League player over the past 50 years. The announcement came as part of the CHLâs 50th Anniversary celebration.
Yzerman played two seasons for the Peterborough Petes before being drafted fourth overall by the Detroit Red Wings in 1983. In his final season with the Petes, Yzerman posted 42 goals and 49 assists for 91 points in 56 games. In his first Ontario Hockey League season, Yzerman had 21 goals and 64 points in 58 games.
In his first NHL season, Yzerman produced 39 goals and 87 points in 80 games. He finished second in the NHL Rookie of the Year race to Buffalo goalie Tom Barrasso (166 points to 101 points).
The CHL initially released the list 10 players at time, but the final 10 players are released one at a time. Other former current or former Red Wings named : Larry Murphy (50th), Brendan Shanahan (34th), Brad Richards (31st), Mike Modano (28th), Luc Robitaille (26th) and Patrick Kane (21st).
