Nobody liked that the Detroit Red Wings GM Steve Yzerman had to give up an unprotected first round draft pick to complete a deal for defenseman Justin Faulk. But Faulk has been a quality acquisition. He’s a player who can help this team offensively and defensively next season.
With four goals in 16 games, Faulk showed he can help this team create more offense from the blue line. A reliable defensive-minded player with 15-goal potential is a valuable performer in the NHL.
When you look at Yzerman’s history of acquiring John Gibson, Alex DeBrincat and now Faulk through trades, he certainly possesses the ability to be a keen dealmaker.
That will be important this summer as he searches for a proven center and a scoring winger. There’s not much scoring available in the weak free agent market. Whatever hope Detroit of landing those two pieces probably centers on trades. But you have to give up significant assets to add goals.
Yzerman may have to take on a bad contract, or give up a quality prospect, or surrender another first round pick to add some offense.
