Man City extends title race with a crucial 3-0 win over Palace!
Real Madrid's performance in El ClĂĄsico highlighted their lack of urgency and fighting spirit, as they struggled to effectively press and defend against their rivals. Key players like Vinicius Jr and Bellingham attempted to disrupt Barcelona's play, but the overall execution was lacking.
El ClĂĄsico was a microcosm of Real Madridâs season. Los Blancos had one mission to fulfill, which was to delay their archrivalsâ league win celebrations. However, from the get-go, it was glaringly obvious that Real Madridâs players lacked enthusiasm, urgency, and fighting spirit. That was mirrored in the way Alvaro Arbeloaâs side pressed high and how they defended in a zonal block.
High up the pitch, Vinicius Jr and Gonzalo Garcia pressed the center-backs, closing down the passing lane toward Gavi and Pedri. Bellingham and Brahim Diaz started their run toward the fullbacks from the half-spaces to prevent the hosts from finding one of the midfielders. Eduardo Camavinga and Aurelien Tchouaméni took charge of Pedri and Dani Olmo. Trent Alexander-Arnold and Fran Garcia marked Fermin Lopez and Rashford:
As the ball was traveling toward Eric Garcia, Gonzalo Garcia followed Gavi across, and Brahim Diaz drifted inside to keep tabs on Pedri, with Camavinga retreating to block off the diagonal passing access to Ferran Torres, who was marked by Raul Asencio.
Barcelona had to find a way out to escape the touchlines. Vinicius Junior, not cutting off the backward passing option, enabled Eric Garcia to work the ball back to Pau Cubarsi. The ball moved across the backline faster than Real Madridâs lateral shifting. On the left side, with a give-and-go from Cancelo toward Fermin Lopez, the hosts could break down Real Madridâs midfield. Canceloâs underlap dragged Camavinga with him, which vacated the space for Pedri between Gonzalo and Camavinga. That saw the Catalans find Rashford via Eric Garcia. The pair worked in tandem on the right side, with the former crossing the ball outside:
Real Madrid changed to a man-oriented high-press from open play. Vinicius and Gonzalo lacked urgency as they jumped from the midfielders toward the center-backs. As a consequence, Barcelona easily circulated the ball across the backline. Ferran Torres and Dani Olmo dashed deeper, dragging Raul Asencio and Antonio Rudiger with them. Brahim Diaz leaving time and space for Cancelo enabled the latter to dink the ball over the top for Fermin Lopez, who proceeded with a sprint behind Real Madrid. Lopez arrived at the box, looking to square the pass toward Rashford. However, Fran Garcia cleared it away.
Barcelonaâs off-ball rotations opened up gaps within Real Madridâs 4-4-2 medium block. On the left side, Fermin Lopez would drop down the touchlines, which encouraged Pedri to come from behind and draw Camavinga with him. To enter the left half-space, Cancelo would slide a parallel pass to Fermin Lopez and proceed with an underlapping run around Brahim Diaz toward the space evacuated by Pedri. As a reaction, TchouamĂ©ni retreated to cut off the passing lane between Cancelo and Torres. However, it only freed up Gavi, as Real Madridâs front two hadnât recovered their positions yet. Therefore, Barcelona can work the ball toward the right side. There, Dani Olmo diagonally approached Fran Garcia to pull TchouamĂ©ni across, unlocking the diagonal passing lane from the half-space toward the center. Eric Garcia fed Ferran Torres, who worked the ball around Camavinga, looking to crash the box. However, Rudiger fouled him at the edge of it. Rashford curved an outswinging shot toward the left of the net to open the score.
Barcelonaâs off-ball movements were detrimental to Real Madridâs defense, as the white team players were unable to react in real time to Barcelonaâs rotations. Here, Fermin Lopez noticed Dani Olmoâs run behind Raul Asencio, who Ferran Torres pulled out:
Rudiger failed to keep tabs on Olmo, who laid the ball off to Torres into the space freed up by the German center-back. Ferran Torres sneaked behind Asencio, exploiting his blindside and his lethargy in tracking him back. As a consequence, Real Madrid conceded the second goal.
Real Madridâs medium blockâs problem had no end in sight. Los Blancos allowed the home team easy access to the center. That came through Vinicius Junior, not blocking off the passing lane between the backline and Barcelonaâs double pivots. In fact, Gavi would shuffle across, pulling Gonzalo with him. TchouamĂ©ni would point out with his hands that Pedri was free. Nonetheless, Vinicius Junior kept a high position near Cubarsi. From there, Pedri received Gerard Martinâs pass and scampered forward to pick out Rashford in a one-on-one situation against Fran Garcia. The English winger tried to cross the ball, but it went to Courtoisâ hands.
Barcelona resetting the buildup enticed Real Madrid forward and generated gaps for the Catalans to work the ball out and expose the white teamâs woes in the high press. Arbeloaâs side would adopt a man-oriented approach high up the pitch. As a response, the Catalans proceeded with neat off-ball movements relying on playing diagonally to create separation from their markers and create passing lanes to bypass the man-to-man high press.
In the below sequence, as Barcelona plays the ball back, Real Madrid locks on a man-oriented high press. Juan Garcia makes use of Vinicius Junior not backing his team up in the process to directly feed Eric Garcia, as Bellinghamâs lateral shift takes time. A diagonal counter movement between Eric Garcia and Ferran Torres saw the latter create separation against Raul Asencio. That encouraged Rashford to make an out-in run. Torres detected the large space to slide the ball behind the backline. Rashford infiltrates the box and fires a shot that Courtois deflects outside with the top of his fingers:
This is not the first time Real Madrid has looked shattered collectively in the 2025/26 season. The lack of commitment and urgency from the likes of Vinicius Junior in the front line usually sets up a ripple effect, as him being lethargic and passive out of possession initiates the fall of the dominoes behind and generates gaps and numerical superiority as the opponents progress. Modern day football requires an effective strategy in and out of possession to keep up with the elite teams and stay in the competition, which is what Real Madrid lacked in recent years and contributed to a second trophyless season in a row.
Real Madrid struggled with urgency and effective pressing, which was evident throughout their performance.
Key players included Vinicius Jr, Bellingham, and Brahim Diaz, who attempted to close down Barcelona's midfielders.
Real Madrid's defense was ineffective, failing to adequately mark key players like Gavi and Pedri, allowing Barcelona to exploit passing lanes.
El ClĂĄsico was significant as it represented Real Madrid's last chance to delay Barcelona's league title celebrations, highlighting their struggles this season.
