Following the 2025-26 season, ending in the postseason, the Philadelphia Flyers have put themselves back on the map, whether that is just getting the appreciation from the city of Philadelphia, having the fans behind them, or even being back on the national scale.
This past season has made Philadelphia a hockey city once again.
The Flyers are a team on the upswing. The past few seasons have been a tough rebuild for the team, not making it the ideal landing spot for established talent. Players who become available want to go to contenders, not teams with no chance.
Not only have the Flyers proven they can win, but they are also showing that Philadelphia rallies behind its team. With their united ovation for their team following their Game 4 elimination, Flyers fans have shown their passion.
That will ultimately help draw talent to Philly. Flyersâ GM Danny Briere says that having a playersâ coach like Rick Tocchet certainly helps.
âIâve gotten a lot of comments from agents that their players would certainly be open to playing here because of Rick Tocchet,â said Briere.
He felt that shift this year when talking to other GMs during trade season. Players can veto trades with no-trade or no-movement clauses. Briere alluded to the fact that some players have refused to waive said clauses to Philly. This year, it was a different story.
âOne thing I can tell you is just talking to different GMs this year compared to previous years, I didnât hear as many âNo, I canât send them your way because of trade protection.â So I didnât hear as much of that.â
For obvious reasons, Briere cannot talk to players currently under contract elsewhere in the league. But, from talking to his own players, he can see the excitement in playing for the Flyers.
âObviously, I canât talk to players on other teams; I donât know exactly how they feel. But just talking to our players, the feeling is that, yes, itâs an exciting place to be. They realized that before they knew how well they were treated here. But now that we have a team thatâs fighting for a playoff spot, a team thatâs on the upswing, I think that has them excited. And I assume that players around the league are taking notice of that.â
The Flyers are becoming a destination team due to their recent performance and rebuilding efforts that have garnered fan support and national recognition.
Key factors include improved team performance, strong fan engagement, and a renewed identity as a competitive hockey city.
The Flyers had a notable season that ended in the postseason, showcasing their potential and contributing to their resurgence.
The Flyers struggled with a tough rebuild, which made them less appealing to established players seeking to join competitive teams.

But just because Philly is becoming a hockey destination, it doesnât mean the Flyers will take anyone who wants to come to play for the Flyers. They have fewer openings than they did even a year ago.
âOur young players are taking some of those spots,â said Briere. âItâs not like we have a lot of holes as weâve had in the last few years. Coming down the stretch. You look at adding three players in Bump, Barkey, and Martone, who didnât start the year with us. I have a hard time imagining our lineup without them.â
Briere likes the way the team is taking shape. You can tell that his vision is starting to come together.
âThose three names you know, coming late in the season and filling up roles, our lineup looks a lot better all of a sudden. So itâs not like we have a lot of holes to fill, but youâre always looking to improve a little bit. Yeah, I think weâre probably more of a destination than we were even a year ago.â
